, because treatises can do nothing about it, as it does not follow the desires of individuals. Therefore, if we examine what the term 'basis' of things and non-things relies on, it does not truly rely on external self-characteristics. Because one cannot establish or refute self-characteristics, and it is not the real object of sound, etc., which has been extensively explained. So, if we say, what does naming rely on? It relies on the sound meaning that appears before the conceptual mind. When naming is done in this way, we want all establishment and refutation to apply. Relying on the exclusion of others, which is merely a negation from non-sound, the meaning of the name 'sound' appears in the object of conceptualization. For example, one thinks and says that sound is audible, sound is pleasant, sound is not corporeal, and sound is not permanent. Similarly, even if a thing does not exist, one thinks and says that sound is permanent, and such fabrications also rely on sound meaning. In this way, although establishment and refutation are done based on sound meaning, because appearance and conceptualization are mixed together, the way in which it is understood and applied to the self-characteristics of things is that all worldly people, from learned scholars to foolish cowherds, rely on the path of naming. Second, to show that this is reasonable: sound meaning, although not real, is a reasonable basis; other than sound meaning, it is not reasonable to rely on. First, if establishment and refutation are not done by truly relying on external things, then what is this called 'sound meaning'? If it itself is a thing, then the establishment and refutation done to a pot will not apply to sound, just as in the previous examination of name and characteristic. If it does not have thingness, then it will not become the basis of naming either, or so you might think? If we examine the sound meaning that serves as the basis of naming, whether it is an internal or external thing, even if there is not the slightest bit of expressible that establishes self-characteristics, the sound meaning, which is a property that appears before the conceptual mind due to the confusion of appearance and conceptualization, is related to those external things and appears in the mind in a way that is not different. Moreover, sound meaning is also the object to which the expressing sound applies, and it is said to exist on the level of naming without examination, merely for this reason, but it is not even before the conceptual mind.

If so, it cannot serve as the basis for terms. If it is certain, then it is believed that all terms rely on this, and the worldly way of terms ends there. Furthermore, upon analysis, the so-called sound and meaning reach the expression of self-character due to the key point that things themselves are not independent, and because they appear before the mind due to the power of beginningless habitual tendencies, they can serve as the basis for terms. Second, if one does not engage in affirmation and negation in this way with regard to sound and meaning, then when establishing or refuting one dharma of self-characterized things, it will become the case that everything that is the same entity as that which is to be established will be established simultaneously, and similarly, with regard to that which is to be refuted, everything that should be refuted in that thing will be refuted simultaneously, because the entity of self-characterized things is one, without different parts. That is indeed the case: when a pot is established, all dharmas that are the same entity as it are established, and when a pot is broken, it is as if everything is destroyed, because it is impossible for there to be different parts in self-character, some established and some not established. If the dharma to be established is not one with that self-character, but rather the self-character of the dharma to be established is different, then just as refuting and establishing other things that are unrelated, establishing or refuting that dharma on any subject will become other, and will not converge on the nature of one subject, such as establishing impermanence and the qualities of space, etc., on sound, or refuting pervasive, etc., will not become the dharma of that subject, but will become distinct from each other. Thus, when engaging in affirmation and negation with regard to the self-character of things, it is not reasonable to be either one or different from that dharma. Second, how does one engage in affirmation and negation? The way in which affirmation and negation occur before the mind. Only by imputation is terminology permissible. Although it is imputed, it appears as real. First, taking as a basis one subject, such as sound, which is the basis for various different dharmas, when establishing one dharma such as momentariness, the dharma to be established appears as if it relies on that subject, and even if there are various other dharmas, they are treated as if they are neutral, without being apprehended by the mind at that time, and when refuting permanence on sound, it appears as if the sound is devoid of the permanence to be refuted, and it also appears as if it relies on dharmas other than that which is to be refuted.
