How can we be certain of the separation or necessity of "self" and "life" in objects like pots that lack awareness? It's just empty talk. According to the view that there is a "self," since the "self" cannot be directly seen, one can only prove it through inference, but inference cannot be established because the logic of the power of things refutes it. Second, if "self" is taken as the subject, it lacks pervasion; if taken as the probandum, it lacks the corresponding relation. First, to prove where the "self" exists or does not exist, but since the essence of the "self" cannot be determined, no proof can be made for it, because a valid reason that meets the three modes can never be found. For example, because some characteristics of things like life and movement are seen, it is said "this has" or "this does not have." If it could also be seen that the "self" exists in some places and does not exist in others, then it could be understood that the "self" exists in some places and does not exist in others. However, since the "self" can never be seen at any time or place, what is the point of thinking about where it exists or does not exist? It is meaningless. Therefore, if "self" is taken as the subject, no matter what reason is given, it cannot be established because the basis of the subject is not established, just like taking the son of a barren woman as the subject to give a reason. Second, if it does not exist, the non-separation cannot be established; if it exists, it does not have concomitance. First, because the "self" is separated, "life" is not separated. If it is proved to be so, it is too extreme. First, as mentioned above, it is explained that the reason why "life" is separated cannot be established because the "self" is separated. The logician says: If so, then the living body is the subject, not possessing life, because there is no "self," like a pot. It is not right to make such an excessive statement, because the cause of life is not "self," but something else. What is it? Because causes such as intelligence and effort do not exist, life and so on are not seen in objects such as pots, which are the subject, so if the body also lacks causes such as intelligence, then the living body should also not have the result of life, just like a corpse. Therefore, such an irrelevant excessive statement is like shooting an arrow in a dream. Second, if according to the Buddhist view, both the living body and the pot are equally without "self," so in this respect they are somewhat similar, so the difference in whether other dharmas such as intelligence exist or not

If it becomes a picture, it is the same as being lifeless. If you think so, then both the body and the vase are measurable, because they are the same. Why can't we infer that vases and so on also have a self? If you infer other things with irrelevant signs, that's too much. If you say that because our sect does not say that the vase has a self, we do not think so. If the reasons you Buddhists put forward are correct, then this must also be established by valid cognition. Valid cognition itself is the cause of all intentional settings. Without valid cognition, how can one distinguish between things and non-things merely by personal intention? Mere intention is not important, valid cognition is important. If it is established by valid cognition, there is no freedom to not accept it, so it must be admitted. Third, breathing, opening and closing the eyes, moving the lips, etc., are all born from one's own memory, desire, the effort of 'I' and the mind. These memories and so on arise from objects, faculties, and consciousness. These objects and so on also become mutually cooperative conditions, depending on the similar previous immediate cause. For example, seeing the shape of a sour taste or smelling an odor will remind you of the sour taste, generate desire, and cause saliva to flow. The body's strength, wisdom, and effort will produce breathing, opening and closing of the eyes, and so on. These memories and so on, from the aggregation of the three conditions of object, faculty, and consciousness, will recall the past and generate desire and effort in others. The faculty, the eye faculty, arises from its own kind and is a condition for the arising of consciousness. Attention is also a condition for other knowledge, and also a cooperative condition for knowledge, so that the faculty can also exist well, and so on. Thus, it seems that from these causes alone, the object of self, that is, the object that is the basis of the assumption of self, is only these six internal sense bases. Apart from assuming many impermanent things as self, there is no independent self at all. Therefore, this thing called self depends on the law that if there are respective causes and conditions, it exists, and if there are not, it does not exist. Apart from that, one cannot understand the cause of breathing and wisdom as self.
