Without relying on clear knowledge, it is not possible to understand that this is clear. If clear knowledge has not arisen, how can there be clarity in the nature of a dull eye? Just as the way a lamp illuminates a vase, and the way consciousness understands knowledge, neither of these ways of clarity is possible there. If a certain dharma does not establish its own nature as clear, but merely by its existence it can make other things clear, then there would not be a single unclear thing among all these beings, and everything would become clear. Because all things would become clarifiers of all other things, even if they themselves are not clear, you would admit that other things are clear. Therefore, the thought that "my eye is clear" is due to the power of the clarity of the knowledge that arises from it, experienced through self-awareness. Otherwise, like someone else's eye, who can understand whether it is clear or unclear? Even if the knowledge that arises from it is clear, if it is not experienced through self-awareness, it will not be understood as clear. If it is not understood, then the difference in the cause (sense faculty) cannot be understood either, because the sense faculty itself is hidden. Therefore, know that all terms of experience arise only from the self-aware mind that experiences self-clarity. This concludes the third chapter, the explanation of the chapter on direct perception, from the Commentary on the Compendium of Valid Cognition. Thus, having correctly established the reality of conventional objects without error, and having preceded with the reasoning that establishes validity along with direct perception, now, intending to show to others how one understands through inference, the explanation of inference for the sake of others is presented. The general characteristic of the statement of proof is shown. How to prove is explained by distinguishing the methods. First, the meaning of stating what one has seen is explained. The necessity of stating "meaning" is explained. The meaning of making very clear is explained. First, the necessity of abandoning wrong conceptions is shown. Its reason is well established. First, eliminating the confusion of others and generating correct appearances by speaking in a way that possesses the power of true reasoning is as stated in the Ornament for the Mahayana Sutras: "Those with virtuous qualities and intelligence of reasoning are always obstructed by demons."

D. Moreover, excellence and seeking, as well as dispelling the arguments of others, are the characteristics of not seizing and bringing to maturity. As it is said, and following the method of establishing and refuting, it is explained. If asked, what is the general principle of establishing statements? The Pramana Sutra says: "The inference established for the sake of others makes one's own seen meaning very clear." As it is said, the meaning of the words that eliminate the three faults of mind, faults of meaning, and faults of speech are explained in order. In general, in the case of inference for the sake of others, the inference that makes one's own seen meaning very clear is the result. However, if this result is designated as the name of the causal statement, then, like the statement "Look at the running deer," there will also be the fault of direct perception for the sake of others. Do you think that the causal statement can produce the result—the direct perception of seeing the deer? However, words alone can never produce direct perception. If it could produce direct perception, then telling a blind person about a white conch shell should also produce direct perception. Therefore, like the statement "Look at the running deer," it actually produces inference, and one will definitely obtain the direct perception of seeing the deer. However, because the inference has already arisen beforehand, it is definitely named "inference for the sake of others." If it is said that since the three-aspect reason has already been stated, why are "one's own seen" and so on mentioned? The initial statement of "one's own seen" and so on is necessary because it has the function of dispelling the wrong conceptions of others. How does it dispel them? Because it indicates and makes others understand the meaning of what is to be established, although the establisher himself has not seen it with valid cognition, because other opponents have promised or established the scriptures they accept, their seeing is also the establisher's own desired proof of what is to be established. Thus, in order to dispel the wrong conceptions spoken by some Samkhyas, the statement "seen by the establisher himself" is stated. If one does not see oneself as being able to establish, then merely being known by others cannot establish anything. Also, the Samkhyas say: consciousness and happiness, dharma nature, are without mind, because they are things that are born or impermanent. For example, like the five aggregates of form and so on. Thus established, its reason
