Pages 701 to 800 Pages 701 to 800 If it does not arise, then the ālaya-vijñāna does not become the cause of the six entering consciousnesses, because although there is the cause, the ālaya, its going and stopping are not seen, but the going and stopping of consciousness are seen, therefore the close obtaining of all consciousnesses only becomes consciousness, if so. This fault is not there, although there is the close obtaining of the ālaya-vijñāna, and the entering consciousnesses of different kinds arise simultaneously, but like consciousness especially focusing on form, etc., at that time, one extremely clear mind weakens the ability of other entering consciousnesses to arise, therefore at that time, other entering consciousnesses do not arise from the ālaya-vijñāna, like a wave arising from the ocean, but arising in dependence on its previous movement. Thus, if there is the cause, the ālaya, then how is it known that the entering consciousnesses arise appropriately in dependence on their immediately preceding one? If the later entering consciousnesses do not arise in dependence on the earlier ones, but only arise from the ālaya, then the entering of the earlier consciousness is the same as the immediately preceding condition, then the later consciousness does not depend on others, and if that is the case, then it should always arise indeterminately in many ways, but the consciousness is the same as the previous one, and the discriminations arise sequentially, and many do not arise simultaneously, therefore the later ones depend on the earlier ones sequentially, which is extremely established. Second, stating the tenets of others that all consciousnesses do not always arise simultaneously. Refuting that the permanent, single consciousness arises. Refuting that it arises from the self possessing consciousness. Refuting that it arises from the aggregates. First, the Vaiśeṣikas, etc., say that consciousness is extremely subtle, like the nature of an indivisible atom, and is permanent. It is only one, therefore it enters from the nose sense, and when it is attached to other smells, it does not go to other senses and objects, and because it does not go, when it holds one object, other sense consciousnesses do not arise, and it does not arise from the ability of the previous close obtaining. This is not reasonable, because in some cases, when the conditions are complete, the six entering consciousnesses arise appropriately simultaneously. Thus, the entering consciousnesses arise with the same entering of objects, but consciousness is only the same, therefore at all times, knowing others from one object
