Since it would become neither the probandum nor the probans, such an answer is of no use whatsoever. Secondly, in order to refute the view of some commentators on logic, such as those who take many sons, that the subject term is a probans, the opponent's doubt is first introduced, saying: The materialists say that the statement of the subject term is the language of the probans, because it is to be stated at the time of establishing the opposite appearance, just like the words of the sign and the example. In response to this, it is said that if this is the case, then direct perception should also be a probans, because it includes both correct and apparent. The opponent then says that direct perception is not a word, but here, if the proposition is made into a probans, then the verbal statement of the proposition is the probans, and with this difference, that fault does not apply. If so, then the language of refutation should also be a probans, because it has verbal statement and correct appearance. The opponent takes the subject term as the probans, and establishes the reason for establishing the sign including the apparent, that is, having the correct appearance, and the word "etc.", also including the difference of verbal statement, and establishes the probans. And the answer that shows the uncertainty by means of direct perception and refutation is an irrelevant and laughable point, and it is only a waste of time to raise irrelevant doubts and then give irrelevant answers. Why is it irrelevant? Because such an establishment of the sign is not itself valid reasoning, as has already been said in the context of refuting the Vedas. Moreover, both the opponent and the respondent think that the pervasion can be established merely by not seeing it in the contradictory side, and if it has an appearance, it is a probans. If so, then the subject of the proposition is a probans, because it states the correct appearance. If so, this sign is uncertain, because in the case of inference for others, it is not necessary to see the invariable concomitance in the probans, and conversely, there is no valid cognition that harms it. Therefore, in such a case where the probandum and the probans are not the case, merely showing uncertainty with other answers is as futile as a blind person grabbing the back of a sighted person. Moreover, it was previously said that the Vedas have no beginning, because...

Because it is other statements that appear first. When Bharata and others did not show it definitively, (someone) said that this is different from them, that the language of the Vedas has characteristics different from other languages. Regarding the characteristics that the Vedas themselves have, others do not have, but other conversations also have them, so it does not contradict the contradictory, so just as it shows that it cannot establish anything, it should be understood in this way. Second, how to establish the method. (1) Explain the definition of the knowable side (subject). (2) Explain the classification of the means of knowing (reason). First, (1) explain the definition of what is to be established in one's own system. (2) Refute the definition of what is to be established in another's system. First, (1) explain the first four ways to enter into establishment. (2) Explain the latter one that has not been refuted. First, (1) explain the four things to be taught in general. (2) Explain the differences that are difficult to understand. (3) Show the necessity of classifying and summarizing the definition of the subject. First, if you do not consider what is to be established as a part of the means of establishment, then when establishing the means of establishment, what is the use of stating the definition of what is to be established? (Answer:) When the means of establishment is truly stated, even if what is to be established is not stated separately, it is still meaningful to understand, but here the definition of what is to be established is stated in order to avoid confusion about the definition of what is to be established, because it is seen that some people think that what is to be established is non-existent and existent, and to eliminate this confusion, the sutra says: "The essence alone should be shown, the self-nature and intention are not eliminated." In this way, there are five definitions of what should be shown or what is to be established, namely the word "essence", and the particle "alone", the word "self-nature", and the four words "intention", which successively show its four definitions, namely first cutting off what has been established by valid cognition, and then (cutting off) what has not been established, and although it has not been established, it is not part of the means of establishment, just like the example of the unestablished sign, and in the meaning of the treatise, what is to be established is stated in a specific situation, and what the opponent promises with intention, these are all grasped in a decisive way with these words. Moreover, what has not been eliminated will be shown later, here when analyzing how the definition is established on what basis, the four ways to enter into establishment are explained first, and for it, there is little illusion about the essence, and the meaning of saying "alone" can be understood by explaining the meaning of self-nature and intention in detail.
