Doubts about contradictions are dispelled. This is to avoid disputes. First, the teacher Dignāga said: "Wishing to generate certainty in others as one has ascertained oneself, therefore, the connection of the subject-property and the probandum must be stated, and other than that should be avoided." Isn't this saying that the probandum should be stated? That is not the case, its meaning is to show what is to be measured, as it is said: "The probandum is considered to be the object of the meaning of the reason." As it is said, the very fact that the power of the meaning of the reason, which possesses the three aspects, becomes the object of application, means that the statement of the probandum itself does not have the power to prove it. This is said to be the meaning that is to be understood, shown, or stated based on the reason, because it is understood from the reason. Second, if it is said that the statement of the proposition also has power, because the statement of the proposition is the basis on which the words of the reason rely. Then, the statement of the reason also relies on the occasion when the opponent doubts and wants to know what the matter is like. Therefore, doubt also becomes a proof. Furthermore, wanting to know, the appropriate occasion, the opponent's thoughts, wanting to establish the probandum, etc., would also become proofs, and if all of these had to be stated as proofs, it would be too much. If it is said that although the reason is established based on doubt, etc., the direct result of those causal relationships is the statement of the proposition, and only that becomes the proof? The other party will accept the aspect that is inconsistent with the proponent and intention of the proof. For example, when saying "sound is permanent," even if the words of the proof that sound is impermanent are applied, it is the same as the proposition, so the statement of the proof would become endless. Third, stating the meaning of making very clear: possessing the three aspects is what makes clear, other than that is not what makes clear. This is to avoid disputes. First, the combination of words that establishes the meaning is neither incomplete nor excessive, but clarifies through pure words that generate the understanding of the meaning, that is its meaning. Moreover, after the disputes of other logicians and early members of our own school have been established, they also want to establish a syllogism with five members, for example, saying: there is fire.

Therefore, the proposition (dampa bca') and, because there is smoke, stating the reason, and like the kitchen, this is the example, and some places with smoke also have fire, this is the application, and there is fire, this is the conclusion, thus it is considered as five limbs. Some of our own schools consider it to have three limbs: proposition, reason, and example, but the example is only an example that shows pervasion, and there is no other difference in its own power. Verbal expression has two limbs, namely stating the property and pervasion, and nothing else is meaningful, because for one's own continuum, any meaningful thing, the cause of generating realization or the ability to become a limb, truly exists in the three ways in which the thing itself is established. And remembering these three ways truly exists in the language that states these three ways, because language can conform to the state of things, thereby appearing in memory, so stating these three ways is the proof, and nothing else is needed. Second, the opponent's argument and response. First, if the object to be proven is not pointed out in advance, then the reason alone cannot be established, because it is like shooting an arrow without a target. If it is said that the object to be proven by the reason, only through the statement word explicitly pointed out verbally, can also establish the ability to prove, then. Second, if it is said that stating the thing to be proven must also be a limb of the proof, and if it is lacking, the thing to be proven cannot be established, but this is not the case. For example, whatever is made is impermanent, like a pot. Sound is also made. Like this, in the case of stating the pervasion in advance, even if there is no proposition word such as "sound is impermanent", it can be clearly expressed. Or, in the case of stating the property in advance, sound is made, and whatever is made is impermanent, like a pot. Or, saying that sound is made, and whatever is made is impermanent, this expression can also make people understand that sound is impermanent, and if it can produce this understanding, then what is the loss of lacking a proposition? Even if a proposition is added, what additional merit can be gained? Therefore, the proposition is not the proof. Sound is impermanent, because it is permanent. Even if it is said like this, it is established by the power of the reason, not by the proposition.
