Pa'o. Thus it is said. Third, when going to different places in this way, if it is established by experiencing as external objects, just like seeing the arrangements of those places that have existed from before, then how can one say that it does not exist? If one thinks like this, then when any different place, like the arrangement of each pure land in the boundless sky, awakens in accordance with the habits of seeing similar appearances of meaning, one experiences such different and dissimilar appearances. Because the habits of such appearances of meaning awaken, it is like the appearance of traveling to many different places in a dream. Even so, appearances do not establish external objects, because the mind itself appears in two ways. That is, without relying on external objects, just by the awakening of internal habits, various appearances arise. Therefore, even in the mind alone, there are two ways of appearing: as the object to be grasped and as the grasping mind. For what reason? Because in the two ways of grasping and being grasped, the mind at the same time does not have conceptualization, so it is experienced that way; and later conceptual thought remembers that there are such two ways, so the two ways of this mind are established. Because there are two ways, the self-awareness that the grasped is experienced by the grasper is itself the result of valid cognition (pramāṇa), that is, in the case of universally conventional valid cognition, the meaning of convention is established only by experiencing seeing, hearing, and so on. Second, the way of appearance depends on the measure of the result of meaning: Meaning exists, but self-awareness is the result. Refuting the unreasonable in this. First, Meaning exists, but that object does not appear. Therefore, self-awareness is reasonably the result. First, The way of abiding is the mind itself experiencing. The way of appearing gives rise to attachment to external objects. Other than that is unreasonable. The first is, In the Sutra of Valid Cognition it says: "Or self-awareness is the result, From its nature, meaning is determined, The appearance of the object itself, Is measured by this valid cognition." As it is said, in the case where the way of appearance follows the appearance of external objects, even according to the view of the Sutra School, the external object is the object to be measured, the grasped aspect is valid cognition, and the self-awareness experienced by the grasping aspect becomes the result. Just as it was said, because two ways are established in the mind, whatever appears and whatever is experienced is only the experience of the mind.

That is, at any time, for the various manifestations of consciousness such as blue, for the object that is the cause of generating the manifestation, whether one wants an external object different from consciousness, or does not want it and only says it is an internal habit, both of these schools, when the mind grasps the object, the external object is not established, and it is only the manifestation of consciousness, and one can only experience it in this way. This verse is translated in this way, and it should be explained in this way, but the explanation of the two kinds of consciousness seems slightly different. Or, wanting and not wanting are the cause of manifestation, the object itself is seen as agreeable and disagreeable, and both of these situations experience the manifestation of consciousness that is not established as the object itself. Second, in this way, it is only the experience of consciousness, but the consciousness that arises firmly from habit gives rise to attachment to things from what appears to be things. At any time, the part of consciousness that arises firmly from habit is considered to be a thing, therefore, the sensory consciousness appears to be related to the external object, in which case, in reality, the senses and the object are only the manifestation of consciousness, and there is nothing else besides that, but due to the confusion of the mind, the consciousness itself that is experienced is regarded as an external object, and the subsequent consciousness also confirms it in this way and gives rise to attachment, just like the senses and objects in a dream. At that time, if viewed from that perspective, the thing-consciousness or thing-cognition itself is regarded as the result of valid cognition, but if analyzed correctly, it is the result of self-cognition, because the so-called similarity of things is unreasonable except for the apprehended manifestation. Third, refuting and unable to admit. First, if the essence or nature of these external objects is experienced as a manifestation that conforms to the wishes of the observer, that is, a manifestation that conforms to the mind, or is experienced as another manifestation that is unwanted and deviates, then the things that appear as wanted or unwanted must also become thing-consciousness, and it cannot be said that one has not seen either of them in turn, because the two are no different in terms of being the object of the self-characteristic of things. Therefore, even if external objects exist, they are only as one experiences them, and one believes that the object exists in that way.
