Regarding a heterologous dharma that does not depend on the mind's own dharma, no matter what is established as a sign, one cannot infer the existence of mind from it, because the connection cannot be determined. Second, the reasons why mind-dharma is not suitable as a sign are: a sign that is one with the mind cannot be established, and a dissimilar result-sign is impossible. First, if one thinks that even if the mind cannot be established from the dharma of things, it can be established if the mind's own dharma is established as a sign, then, if the mind's own dharma is manifest, then a sign is not needed, but you have not admitted this. If the mind itself is not manifest, then its dharma cannot be manifest either. Whatever is established as a manifest sign to establish the mind, such as the mind's own dharma—pleasure, etc., what different entity is that compared to one's own mind? Those aggregates of mental events, with the main mind—the mind, and the faculties, objects, etc., having the same cause, arising from one place, for what reason is it said to be different from the mind? There is no reason. If that is the case, when those signs are established as manifest to oneself, then the manifest self-awareness is already established, like holding something in one's hand and looking for it elsewhere, for something that is already manifestly established, there is no need for the difficulty of proving it with a sign. Thus, for an opponent who insists that he has a mind, but cannot prove it with any manifest or inferential valid cognition, it is tantamount to self-destruction. Second, from knowledge A dissimilar result-sign is also impossible. Whatever sign is established that arises from a cause other than the cause of knowledge itself, that is also prone to error in proving it, because one who has never seen the mind itself cannot determine the cause-and-effect relationship between that sign and the mind. That is to say, as a result-sign for establishing the mind, apart from the five objects such as form, the five faculties, and the objects cognized by the mind, that is, the latter five sense consciousnesses, there is no other target that can be indicated as a result of the mind. Apart from these three sets of five, there is nothing else that can be set up. And the two sets of five faculties and five objects are beyond the faculties, so they themselves are not manifestly established, so how can the mind be established? It is necessary to establish the mind itself first, and then infer the faculties based on its direction, and the objects cognized by the sense consciousnesses should also be known by knowledge itself.

Regarding these, like form, it is necessarily a consequent that arises from the root consciousness that sees itself. Otherwise, if there is no eye consciousness, then one cannot know anything that is separate from the existence of form, so form etc. cannot be the result-sign of self-grasping consciousness. Thus, for whatever consciousness does not exist or consciousness itself is not established, establishing another sign to prove consciousness is merely unexamined, random talk. Second, regarding the unrelated: Things etc. exist, but are not signs; For mind, thing-signs are impossible. First, in one's own continuum, mind is not established; Therefore, one cannot infer the minds of others. First, not seeing a connection is not a sign; Seeing it, one does not know it is established; Therefore, knowledge is not established from things. First, even if there is a sign to establish mind, how can that sign realize mind if the connection between that consciousness and that sign has never been seen by a valid cognition? Signs become the cause of knowing hidden things that are related to oneself, but they do not become the cause of clarifying things that have never been seen to be related to things. If so, one sign would reveal all hidden things. Second, if one says that the sign that establishes mind in one's own continuum is first used to establish that consciousness in the continuum of another, and then that is used as an example to establish mind in one's own continuum, then if the connection between the sign and the dharma is not seen in one's own continuum, it is even more impossible to establish it for the hidden mind of another, because that sign has not established the inference of the mind of another, so for that example, another example must be established, so it will become endless, and in the end it will never be possible to establish an example. Third, if consciousness itself is not manifestly established by itself, then nothing can establish it, therefore, consciousness itself establishes the existence of things like blue from the nature of clear experience, but if consciousness is not established, then that consciousness cannot be established from the sign of things in any way, because if the consciousness that is the measurer is not established, then the existence of things themselves cannot be completely established. If things are established without valid cognition, then everything, including the son of a barren woman, will be established. Therefore, one understands form by relying on the eye, but if the eye is not established, then form itself cannot understand the eye.
