Because there is no way to grasp it, it will not have any experience. It is like looking at an empty space with a vase, it is impossible to experience the vase. If it is thought that the external consciousness does not experience other objects, and therefore does not experience its own essence, then all internal experiences, such as "this and this thought arose," will disappear, because it will not have any experience. If this is thought, then the experience of the inner consciousness is undeniably established, and this will be negated by direct perception. If only clinging to external things, and the inner consciousness has no self-clinging or cognitive function, then there must be absolutely no internally appearing consciousness, only external things appear. These two are also not indistinguishable, like blue and yellow, consciousness can be understood through its own experience. The consciousness that has the appearance of external blue and other things is obviously directed towards the outside, and completely judges external things, that is, distinguishes "this is blue, this is yellow," and so on. The inner consciousness of the Dharma, such as happiness and suffering and clinging to blue and yellow, etc., how they arise in one's own continuum, the consciousness that clings in this way, always faces the characteristics of the inner mindstream of the clinging object, thereby distinguishing their differences. Since these two are established through their respective experiences, if it is thought that one's own consciousness has no experience, and the object has experience, this is unreasonable for self-awareness. If you think so, then it is the same for other-awareness, for the inner consciousness, being able to experience and distinguish "this and this," then what else can the external things experience? Not even a little bit of experience. Just because of the untested guess that "it is contradictory for oneself to act on oneself," the name of self-awareness cannot be denied. If examined with the correct reasoning of factual strength, it is impossible to experience others, and through experiencing oneself, from the perspective of clinging to things, other-awareness can also be established. Therefore, do not abandon the main function of the eye sense, and think that the secondary root-basis can see the object, but should acknowledge self-awareness in name. It should be known that all the reasons used by the great masters to refute self-awareness will actually only become refuting the ultimate truth.

If consciousness does not acknowledge its own experience, and does not consider the appearance of any object, such as blue, to be the aspect of consciousness, but instead wants the bare essence of the object itself, then according to those people's view, it is reasonable that the subject-consciousness does not experience the object. Even if the appearance of the object exists there, for the consciousness that holds it, there is no difference arising that follows it, so just like before not seeing the object, there is now no experience at all. Experience means that happiness and so on arise in one's own continuum, and it is the nature of being clear without being hidden, and there is nothing else besides that. Similarly, experiencing external blue and so on is also merely appearing in one's own mind in a clear and knowing way. The so-called experiencing anything is merely the mind arising clearly in the aspect of that thing, and for things that are not mind, there is no experience at all, and experience is also merely the mind appearing in the aspect of that thing, and it is impossible to have experience if it is completely unclear. The so-called appearance is not just like a lamp illuminating a vase, but merely arising in the aspect of the mind, and apart from that, it is impossible to imagine any difference in the appearance of this or that object. Even if it arises in the aspect of the mind, if one does not recognize "what is this" oneself, even if the aspects are completely the same, it cannot become experience, it will only become like a clear lamp and so on. Therefore, without needing others to point out, all that is experienced should be recognized by each individual as being completely the nature of the mind, and that is experience. That is self-awareness, and without self-awareness, such experience would completely disappear. Second, mere similarity is not experience. Arising with similarity does not recognize meaning. Arising with similarity and the gathering of the three certainties is also not. First, merely being similar is too much to experience meaning. Similar minds also cannot help in that regard. First. The Samkhyas and others say that even without self-awareness, experience will not disappear, no matter what is experienced, as long as the mind is similar to that thing, what else is there to experience besides that? The mind becomes similar to the object blue, that is blue.
