Ah. Secondly, the answer is: When inferring fire from smoke, regardless of whether one is an internalist or externalist, one will think that there is fire now, but one only puts the general concept of fire in one's mind, not the manifestation of the self-nature of fire. Obtaining the manifestation of fire from that sign is something that happens later, not immediately. In that case, the habitual knowledge that arises firmly, on the side of the appearance of things, and when only smoke appears, the mere arising of the cognition of hidden fire, even those who say that knowledge is internal will have it, and beyond that, externalists will not have any appearance either. Later, when fire appears, if, like materialists, one becomes attached to the external object itself, then there is no difference in appearance, because it can be experienced. If the self-nature of appearance is not diminished in the slightest, then how can the sign as a result be unreasonable? Like this, in some place, there is a subject, there is fire, because there is smoke. When writing like this, if one asks what the cognition of the appearance of smoke can infer, it is generally said that it infers the self-nature of fire. However, materialists believe that that self-nature is something that has the function of cooking in the external object. If one analyzes further, knowing that something has the function of cooking can never be separated from appearance, so if one says like a Mind-Only proponent, one will only think that it is the cognition of the appearance of fire that is clearly awakened by habit, and one will not think that the self-nature of the fire in the external object is different from cognition. Therefore, one can only realize that kind of fire appearance, and one can never realize the fire itself in the external object, because that is impossible, like the fire in a dream. Therefore, if one thinks about the appearance of fire that is clearly awakened by habit, that is possible, just as externalists will also think that if one goes in that direction, one will be able to see the manifested fire. If one thinks about the present, there is fire in the external object, but one is only attached to the nature of the fire appearance that can be awakened by habit, and it has not manifested, just as when one sees smoke in a dream, one will think that there is fire in that direction. Therefore, whether one is attached to hidden things, thinking that they actually exist, or whether one is attached to manifested things, thinking that this is this, whether one is attached to the external object as it appears, or merely thinks that it is an appearance, by the power of the knowledge that arises firmly from habit, at the time of manifestation and non-manifestation.

The mere appearance of seeming to continue is no different, so even if one admits that external objects do not exist, there is no contradiction in the way things appear. The appearance of dependent arising that arises from the power of habit, and the dependent arising of external objects that is admitted by the power of karma, both appear in the same way. If this key point is not certain, it is difficult to easily establish the view of Cittamātra, so this is very important. The other party says: If that is the case, then this smoke will not arise from fire. Because according to your view, there is nothing other than the clear awakening of the habit of fire, then smoke can still exist without such an appearance of fire. Answer: If one thinks that this smoke is not just the appearance of smoke, but an external reality, then its cause must also be the fire of external self-character. However, if one admits that smoke is merely a self-appearance, then there is no need for external fire as a cause, because it arises from inner habits. Since it can be inferred that the inner habits can be awakened, there will be an attachment to fire, because it is believed that it is the cause of smoke, so there is no contradiction in saying that it arises from fire. Because fire itself is only the awakening of habits, there is nothing else. According to this view, hidden fire can also be considered as merely able to awaken habits, because it is a suitable cause for smoke. So, how can we understand that the mind stream is the essence of habits that can produce the appearance of fire, and is the cause or condition that clearly reveals the wisdom of smoke, so it is reasonable for smoke to arise from fire.
