They are similar only in a superficial way, but the proofs involved through the power of things are not the same. Because, the mind itself, for any object that has never been experienced in any way, the mind cannot be established. If the mind is established, then that mind must prove it in some way, or if one wants external objects, it must also be proven in that way. Because, the object to be measured is established by the power of valid cognition; if valid cognition itself is not established, it is impossible for the object to be measured to be established first and then valid cognition to be established later. Therefore, through this mind with form, proving the non-existence of mind must also be clearly manifested, so this is also a key point that needs to be determined in the Madhyamaka teachings. In the context of terminology where everything that appears culminates in the self-illuminating experience of self-awareness, self-awareness is indispensable. Second, objections are raised to uncertain statements, and from that answer, one's own view is established. First, those who assert the absence of forms say: The cognition of an object is the result of the object, and merely by remembering that knowledge, it is necessarily and universally remembered that the object is its cause, therefore what is remembered is the object, not because knowledge has the form of the object. However, when the object and knowledge are remembered together, it is mistaken to think that this is the form and grasping of knowledge itself. If it is thought that this is merely mixing the object and knowledge together without distinguishing them, then when the root consciousness grasping blue is remembered, its causes, namely appearance, sense faculty, and attention, will also be remembered together with that knowledge, because there is no difference in being the cause. Similarly, all results, whenever remembered, must be grasped together with their direct cause. Therefore, without remembering the potter and clay, it is impossible to remember the earthen pot independently. Second, when knowledge is remembered, the other causes of remembering the object are not remembered, because they are only the same as causes, but the object creates a difference in knowledge that is different from other causes. If this is thought, then, although they are only the same as causes, how is the difference produced by the object known in the result, knowledge? That is relying on being similar to the object, that is, the form and the object, the object and the form are confused or mixed, what else could that be other than the form that arises as being similar to the object? Because delusion arises from similarity, this can be seen in twins and other things; for dissimilar things, it is mistakenly thought to be one.

Therefore, if the difference between remembering an object and not remembering other things is considered to lie in cognition, then undoubtedly, this will establish the view that asserts the presence of aspects. If, when cognizing the result, the object does not bring any additional difference, then the fault of remembering all causes remains. The second view holds that if there are no other aspects, then the way of remembering subsequent recollections is unreasonable. If the initial blue cognition is not a way of having two natures, then the nature of the second cognition of recollection is merely taking a single independent grasping aspect as its object. From then on, each cognition will definitely distinguish "this is this, and that is that," but the mind will not be able to differentiate, because apart from a single aspectless cognition, no difference can be imagined. Therefore, cognition exists in the presence of aspects, and any cognition that exists in a manifest way before the mind, cognizing things (such as blue, etc.) as its essence. This cognition confuses things, that is, mistaking the aspect for the thing itself, and appears as being related to the object and the subject, that is, appearing as the way in which things have aspects. Then, through what does it observe? Through the second cognition that arises after the first cognition of recollection or blue cognition, it will observe the state of that blue cognition in that way. Therefore, all cognitions are confused with things, that is, related to aspects. If all object cognitions are remembered as having the aspect of that object, rather than being remembered in an aspectless way, then the initial cognition that directly cognizes blue itself is related to the object because it arises from the object. However, the subsequent cognition does not directly see the connection with the apprehended object of the previous cognition—blue—therefore, it is not blue as its object, but rather the inner cognition as its object, so it is not related. If this is the case, then the subsequent cognition will never be distinguished by blue when remembering, because the cognition itself does not have the aspect of blue, and you think that it is remembered merely through being related to the object blue. If this is the case, then the first cognition related to blue, when remembering, may be able to remember blue through the power of the connection, but how can it then be remembered as having the aspect of blue? Because there is no blue in the cognition.
