Regarding reliance on linguistic memory, there are two aspects: refuting the real and the doubtful. First, the sense consciousness, such as eye consciousness, which arises from the power of the object of apprehension, does not need to rely on names or linguistic memory. However, for the mind that grasps universals, the object itself would not appear as such without relying on linguistic memory. Because the universal exists as the object of apprehension, it is not the mind that arises, but merely a manifestation from the power of internal factors such as linguistic memory. Second, it is uncertain there. Even if some minds that grasp two objects of cows do not have linguistic conventions, they give rise to subsequent minds without difference in kind, so even if they do not rely on linguistic conventions, universals can generate their own minds. If someone says: Then, the arising of such a mind is because the universal exists as the object of apprehension, not because the two appearances of cows have the same nature or are close, and are related to the subsequent mind. How is that? Like the shape of the eye and the pillar, although there is no common following kind like seeing two cows, they are both the result of eye consciousness, that is, the cause, so the eye and the shape, etc., are close by way of generating eye consciousness, that is, they are considered as the common cause of eye consciousness. Therefore, for what reason is it close, that is, doing it together, it is not because a common dharma exists as an object, so it does not generate mind, but because of other reasons, the minds are combined together in common. If this is the case, then the reason for mutual closeness exists on the thing itself, is this not a substance-ism? No, for example, for the reason of having dewlaps and pendulous necks, etc., the cows are distinguished from other things, so all the cows are classified into one category. Excluding the appearances that do not have these characteristics, and excluding the things that have these characteristics, such kinds of excluding other things, although they also follow all the things that have these characteristics, there is no common object that follows. Seventh, the universal does not appear anywhere, there is the elimination of the real and the uncertain. First, if this universal has the ability to generate self-grasping consciousness, then it is impossible that its nature, which is not confused with other things, does not appear at some time and place. If so
