In establishing that, there are the actual thing and refuting objections to it. First, if considered in terms of the object of engagement that is truly or ultimately, then only one's own characteristic is the object to be measured, because not only manifest cognition but also inference makes that own characteristic the object to be measured. Why? Because the discriminations of existence or non-existence by conceptual valid cognition, as determined by valid cognition, the thing to be done is only a generality, because it is established only from that own characteristic. Also, valid cognition and non-valid cognition, as determined, are distinguished by whether or not they are established in that way in the object to be measured, and not by anything else. Therefore, whatever is measured without actually seeing the own characteristic is mixed with an appearance-conjecture in the mind, and clinging to that object, one thinks of measuring the object. Therefore, whatever is measured is only focused on and flows into the own characteristic of the object. If one wonders why only the existence or non-existence of the own characteristic is examined when examination also applies to the general characteristic, then when examining the general characteristic, one also examines whether this general characteristic has an own characteristic or not. At that time, some people accept it as an entity with an own characteristic, but those who know the reality of things determine that it has no entity, that is, no own characteristic, with valid cognition. Therefore, the principal and the one with limbs, etc., are also mixed with appearance-conjecture, and one thinks that there is such a meaning. When it is determined that it is only a mental appearance and that there is no object of investigation, then one determines that there is no such own characteristic. Therefore, when examining non-existence, one also examines that whatever own characteristic to be negated is non-existent, so it relies on the own characteristic, otherwise there is only the appearance of it in the general characteristic, and there is no other thing to be done, so as before, there is no ability to function, as examined in the context of examining that desire, etc. Second, there are two refutations of contradictions with scripture and reason. First, if the object to be measured is one's own characteristic, then the teacher Dignāga said, "Two characteristics are to be measured." If one thinks that this contradicts the assertion that two are to be measured, then the teacher's assertion does not mean that only the general characteristic different from the own characteristic is measured, but even though the general characteristic is actually measured by inference, ultimately the own characteristic is measured through it, so whatever the own characteristic to be measured is, manifest cognition realizes its own nature, and inference realizes other general characteristics.
