In order to realize the nature of the self-characteristic of "is," the actual objects of measurement of the two valid cognitions (perception and inference) are established as two: the universal and the particular. That is, when a valid cognition engages with the nature of the self-characteristic, perception directly and unerringly measures it, while inference measures it by mistaking the universal for the particular and clinging to it. However, both valid cognitions are similar in that they are not deceptive because they are established in the object's self-characteristic as they are determined. However, there is a difference between the two: perception directly perceives the self-characteristic, so it is not confused about the object of appearance; while the mind that grasps the universal, such as inference, although it appears and clings to the nature of the self-characteristic as it is in the object of appearance of conceptualization, it is mistaken in thinking that the second object of measurement, the self-characteristic, actually exists in that object, because it is not established as such. Secondly, if grasping something as something it is not, and realizing the self-characteristic of another through the nature of the universal or other, then it is confused, and therefore becomes non-valid cognition? Answer: Because the idea of inference as it is determined is not deceptive for that (idea), and it is also established as such in the self-characteristic. Even if it is mistaken for the self-characteristic in the object of appearance, it is still a valid cognition, because it is not deceptive in meaning. Moreover, because it is seen that others can be realized unerringly in other ways, it is meaningless to say that realizing others through the nature of others is not a valid cognition in that object. Valid cognition is established in the way that it is not deceptive in the meaning as it is determined, because it is seen that others are not deceived in this way. For example, although the moment of seeing and obtaining are different, after perception sees blue, even if it is seen later, it will not be deceived in just blue; also, for example, in a place where perception sees the growth of medicine and so on, relying on that consciousness, when searching for medicine in that direction later, it will not be deceived in encountering medicine; also, for example, relying on other phenomena (smoke) to realize fire and so on, like this, the world of realizing others through others is undeniably established, so when grasping the self-characteristic in the way of the universal, it is meaningless in all ways to say that it is confused because of realizing others through others. Furthermore, for those who say that it is unreasonable for the object of measurement to realize others through others, various answers have already been given. For example, the ultimate object of measurement is one, or the universal.

Therefore, regarding the statement that inference becomes the object of things, it has already been answered with "The object itself is not that thing," and so on. If what is measured by both is self-characterized, then it is not appropriate for what is measured to be two, to which it has also been answered with "This is due to the nature of self and other," and so on. If the object of both is self-characterized, then it is said that it is not appropriate to have error and non-error, to which it has already been answered with "Not appearing as it is." And if it is error, then it is said that it is not appropriate not to deceive the self-characterized meaning of the object, to which it has been answered with "Whatever is related to the real," and so on, in the previous chapter. Therefore, even if it is error, to illustrate not deceiving the attainment of the object, a well-known example in the world is given: Mistaking the light of jewels for jewels and running to take them; and with the thought of jewels, manifestly running to take what is the light of a lamp as jewels. Both are mistaken cognitions because they mistake light for jewels, but there is a difference in whether or not they accomplish the purpose of obtaining jewels. Because mistaking the light of a lamp for jewels does not obtain jewels, but mistaking the light of jewels and running obtains jewels. Analyzing this, the jewels themselves are not determined by direct perception valid cognition, nor is it merely the clinging to the thought that they are jewels, but even though it is not inference, if there is also attainment of the object from it, then why is it reasonable to say that it is deceiving the object merely because it is other, merely because it is error? It should be known that this statement is uncertain, and this example should be understood. This mistaking of the light of jewels for jewels without deception is because it arises from a connection, therefore Panchen Shakya Lodro and others consider it to be a sign of the effect as a result. Like that example, even if the appearing object of all inferences does not match the meaning of the self-characterized that exists as it is, like the inference that realizes sound is impermanent, and like the cognition that grasps sound as permanent, among those inferences that appear or seem to appear, the inference that realizes sound is impermanent, which is related to the reality of the self-characterized object that can function, is established as valid cognition, because its way of clinging is in accordance with what exists in reality. Second, refuting the view that valid cognition is not definitely two, it is divided into: establishing the definite number of two; refuting the desire for other numbers than that. First: what is to be measured is two.
