The way of certainty. From this, the measurer is determined to be two kinds. The first is that what is manifest is measured by direct perception, and what is hidden is measured by inference. First, the object to be measured, for any function that can grasp the meaning of an object, if the thing exists, there is a following, and if it does not exist, there is a reverse manifestation of consciousness, which is the autonomous holding of the object's own character. Because it only arises from the existence of the thing, it does not depend on any other things such as symbols, efforts, or signs. Therefore, the meaning of what is grasped that is manifested in this way does not depend on other reasons, but is determined autonomously by direct perception consciousness. The second is that the hidden measurer is shown as a sign. How does the sign understand? Therefore, it is determined to be a single measure. First, apart from the self-characterized manifest thing, any object that is thought and discerned by the thinker, because his present senses have transcended the object of direct perception, and cannot be determined by direct perception, therefore, what is not seen now is the nature of being hidden, and the basis for understanding it is something other than the object to be measured, not the object to be measured itself, because it is hidden. Therefore, the basis for understanding the hidden object to be measured is called a sign. Second, if it is said, what is it like for another dharma to understand another thing? It is not that any other thing is possible, because it would lead to everything understanding everything. Therefore, the sign is related to the collection meaning of the sign-bearer to be proven or its own basis, and if the three aspects are complete, then at that time the other dharma sign can understand what is to be proven. If you want to know how it is related to its own basis, then it is related to the dharma nature that you want to know, that is, the pervasiveness is established, and it is related to the fact that if the dharma to be proven does not appear, then it does not appear, that is, the following reverse pervasiveness is established, and if the three aspects are complete, then due to the power of the relationship, the sign will not mistakenly establish what is to be proven. Thus, when the proven is understood from the sign with three complete aspects, the sign of the knower, such as smoke, is followed by the proven, such as fire, which is merely understanding the nature of the general characteristic of fire, therefore, for the hidden proven, all the dharmas existing in the meaning of self-character will not be particularly distinguished and understood.

From smoke, one can only infer the presence of fire, but cannot distinguish its differences, such as the fire of roots, leaves, sandalwood, etc., and the differences in the state and shape of bright burning cannot be distinguished one by one. Because it is only the sign of smoke, and those different qualities cannot be determined by the measure of concomitance and counter-concomitance. Therefore, what is related to the sign will not be confused about its own object to be proven. Third, as a dharma that has a "non-existence implies non-arising" relationship with the object to be proven, from the dharma that is established as a property of a subject in relation to any object, the arising of realization or knowledge of that object to be proven for the one who wishes to know is inference. Therefore, to prove the existence or non-existence, truth or falsehood of hidden things, it must be inference, and there can be no other valid cognition. Because the object to be measured is itself hidden, there is no other choice but another method to realize it. Moreover, no other method can realize it without deception, so there is no other way than to infer based on correct signs, which is correctly established through reasoning. Second, the measurer is determined to be two, because the object of measurement is either manifest or hidden, and there is no third object of measurement other than these. Because these two do not mix with each other, and it is impossible for them to be both, therefore it is also impossible for them not to be both. Therefore, precisely because the object of measurement is determined to be two, it is believed that the valid cognitions that measure these objects are also determined to be two. Because it is seen that there are two kinds of objects to be measured, manifest and hidden, the view that valid cognition is three or one is refuted. Second, refuting the view that the number of valid cognitions is not fixed at two, but is considered to be another number. Refuting the view that the number is less than two, i.e., one. Refuting the view that the number is more than two. In the first case: first state the opponent's view, and then the answer. First, the Tirthikas say: Whatever does not exist, such as universals, is not an object to be measured, so as an object to be measured, what truly exists is the self-character, the only one, therefore there is only one valid cognition, which is direct perception. Second, the answer is divided into two: answering from the ultimate and conventional perspectives. First, I also agree that the ultimate object measured by valid cognition is the self-character, the only one, as mentioned above. Second, establishing that inference is a valid cognition. Otherwise, there would be absurd consequences.
