There are two aspects: the object and the refutation of that. First, the generalizers say: What is expressed by sound is a general abstraction, and since it is expressed by sound, it is also the object of general thought. Such a general entity exists only as an object of sense perception, so what is expressed by sound exists as an entity. If individual characteristics are expressed, it would lead to absurdities such as the senses being meaningless, and the past and future not being expressed by sound, etc., which they do not want to accept. The response to this is: it is not reasonable, because a generality that is different from the particular cannot be expressed as an abstraction. Why? Because a general abstraction that has become an entity has no basis, and if sound and concept cannot be applied without it, the application of sound and concept will become completely impossible. Even when grasping the general, if it is not grasped together with the particular, then without grasping the basis of the particular, it cannot be the general itself. Even if it is assumed that the general abstraction is expressed, being different from its own clear aspects and existing as an abstraction, it will neither be the same as the clear aspects, nor will it be the clarity of the clear aspects, because seeing the clear aspects does not help to see the general abstraction. Furthermore, the clear aspect does not make it clear, because there is no connection to say, "this is its general." How can the different be related? Is it dependent on birth, which is dependent on another, or on understanding, which is dependent on another? Birth that is dependent on another is like the birth of a sprout, which is dependent on the seed, etc., so there is a cause-and-effect relationship between them. But the general, which is permanent, is neither the result of the clear aspect nor its cause. Understanding that is dependent on another is like understanding something as short in relation to something long, that is, it must be understood as dependent and designated, but the general exists as an entity independent of the clear aspect. Therefore, the clear aspect is not the cause that produces the general, and it is not a birth that is dependent on another or arises based on it. Since they are different entities, like a pillar and a vase, the clear aspect is not the cause for establishing the form of that general, and therefore it is not an understanding that is dependent on another or designated based on dependence. Since there is no connection, how can the clear aspect make the general clear, just as the clear aspect of a cow does not make clear the general of a pillar that is unrelated to it.

Since it does not need clarity, its own nature should always be the object. What is the function of it generating self-awareness? Because it is always present. Secondly, if it is said that from clear things, the independent self-nature of the general is also clear in the manifest mind, so there is no fault of always being the object. If the general produces the function of generating the consciousness that focuses on me, then its ability to generate knowledge of its own nature should always be the ability, and it should not depend on clarity. If at some time when there is no clarity, it does not have the ability to generate self-awareness, then whether there is clarity or not, this general will not be able to generate self-grasping consciousness at any time. The reason is that the ability or inability of the general to generate self-awareness, where its own nature resides, is constant, so it cannot be changed by conditions, then in order to eliminate its inability or ability, the intervention of favorable or unfavorable conditions is impossible. Secondly, the fault is that phenomena etc. do not appear. The part of the phenomena such as blue color and shape etc., which are inherently related to the consciousness of the general, are undeniably certain, then by what are they transformed in the object of the mind that grasps the general? Because the general-grasping mind admits to grasping the independence of the general, and thinks that the general is only a permanent thing empty of shape and color etc., therefore these should not appear. In this way, when the general characteristic of the vase appears, the phenomena such as color and bulging belly should not appear. Since the general does not have these phenomena, then who transforms them like feathers on an arrow? If it is thought that it is transformed by the clear appearance of the vase, then the consciousness that grasps the independence of the general has not grasped the clear appearance of the vase at all, so its phenomena cannot appear there, just as the phenomena of the vase do not appear in the object of the mind that grasps the pillar. Therefore, if the actual object expressed by the sound is a self-characteristic thing different from the meaning expressed, then it is never possible to involve external objects, and if it is the self-characteristic of the meaning expressed itself, then the senses etc...
