It should also be understood through something like seeing without interruption. If one thinks that when the mind's conceptualization ceases, even if the sense consciousness has conceptualization, it will not be felt, that is not the case. When the mind is gathered inward, and then again slightly conceptualizes, one knows for oneself, "My conceptualization has become this and that." If one contemplates after the function of the previously arisen mind has not diminished, it is impossible that one's own mind is not seen or felt by oneself. However, as previously stated, in the case of the cessation of mental conceptualization, the sense consciousness's cognition or awareness of the object is merely the uninterrupted appearance, and there is no feeling whatsoever that "such a general object-possessing conceptualization has arisen." Because of the absence of that, it is established that sense consciousness is free from conceptualization through the experience of self-awareness. If it is not established by the fact that one's own experience completely determines whether or not one's own consciousness has conceptualization, then one will not know whether or not one has a mind, whether or not one has happiness and suffering, and one will become doubtful. Second, establishing that sense consciousness itself is free from conceptualization. Refuting the view that seeing and conceptualization are one. First, the distinction of seeing objects at the same time, that is, the own-character does not appear in some other things, because the own-character is not mixed with object, time, and aspect. From that own-character, the general that commonly follows does not exist in other things, because there is no mind that sees something different from the own-character, or because it is negated by not observing what could appear, and it is obstructed by subsequent inference. Since the own-character is unmixed and there is no general, therefore, all unerring consciousnesses arising from the sense faculties are object-possessing of particular own-characters, because they arise from things that have graspable meaning. For such particular own-characters, sounds that have become names are not possible to apply, because these particular things do not follow other things, therefore they merely vanish in the moment of appearance, and the name as a knower is not applicable. What has become the object of sounds is also the very thing that appears in the object of conceptualization. The sounds themselves are applied to it, because the namer, by his own power, independently designates "this is the name of that thing" to the various parts of object, time, and aspect that appear in the object of conceptualization, which are not determined by the things themselves.

That which is called "No" refers to the way in which things appear that can serve as the basis for naming, through conceptual thought connecting names and things. Whatever can be associated or mixed with that symbol is such a conceptual appearance that is not the domain of the senses, because when there is an appearance of conceptual thought, there is no appearance of things appearing clearly like sensory consciousness. Moreover, even if there is an internal conceptual appearance that does not depend on external objects, it does not appear as an object of the senses, therefore it is not the domain of sensory consciousness. When the self-character of things appears clearly in the consciousness of the senses, how does it appear? That is to say, whether the object of the symbol is clear or unclear, common or uncommon, etc., there are differences. Just as sound does not become the object of the eye, it is impossible for it to mix even slightly with the object of sensory consciousness. Since it itself does not exist in the object, how can there be conceptual thought in the sensory consciousness that is the subject? Just as the eye consciousness that perceives a vase does not confuse with the one that grasps a pillar. In this way, for knowledge, the fact that it transforms into different appearances is what distinguishes things as not being the same. Therefore, the object of appearance of conceptual thought and the object of appearance of non-conceptual thought, as mentioned above, are not the same because they appear as different characteristics. If they appear as different but cannot be established as different, then everything will become the same. If symbols are used for past, future, etc., and for hidden objects, although they are not directly related to the self-character, if symbols are used for the present self-character that is being seen, why not directly relate to the self-character? Even when the self-character of things is present in the eye, when someone points out its name, such as "This is a vase," etc., it is the object of conceptual thought, that is, the object that can be mixed with sound, that the sound directly relates to, and not to the self-character that has become the domain of sensory activity, because it is impossible to attach symbols there in any way. If it were possible, then since the object of the symbol is the self-character, just as the self-character can be indicated by the language of others, even if there is no self-character, it should be possible to indicate it by the language of others. However, since the activity of the senses such as the eye does not act on the object, the self-character does not appear clearly merely through the language of someone uttering a name, therefore the name cannot directly refer to it.
