It transforms, and the thought that color is impermanent is applying impermanence to the generality of color, but since the self-character entity does not appear in the realm of generality, the one who holds the generality does not actually apply impermanence to the self-character. Likewise, all sounds and so on should be understood. Furthermore, those who think that they are holding from the point of applying the generality of impermanence to the self-character have three intentions: In the realm of recognizing sound as impermanent through inference, for the appearing blue and so on, thinking "this is impermanent," and thinking that it is holding onto that which is appearing, this is a decisive consciousness. Even if one thinks, "this object is impermanent," the object of thought remains the generality and has not diminished. It is only due to the mixing of appearance and thought that they are not distinguished as separate. Even if one newly ascertains impermanence from a sign while seeing blue, the object of inference is the generality, and even if there is a self-character that is being seen, it does not make that the actual object. If, without any sign, at the moment of cessation, one thinks, "this will cease" or "it has ceased," then the object of thought is not the self-character, but only the generality. Moreover, ordinary people only realize subtle impermanence through inference, and although coarse impermanence is realized through direct perception, that becomes an object of generality. Thus, although direct perception is a valid cognition, there is no generality in its object; although inference is a valid cognition, its actual object is the generality, not the self-character that is appearing. The definitive knowledge that has already been determined as impermanent by direct and inferential valid cognition is not a valid cognition, but a decisive knowledge, and its object is the generality. If some Tibetans, like those who accept the common basis of direct perception and decisive knowledge, do not consider the second moment of direct perception and so on to be valid cognitions. There are many things to examine about this, but I will not elaborate on it here. Thus, since the three aggregates of mixed self and generality never exist in the object of valid cognition, there is no such thing as "perfectly combined valid cognition." Second, abandon transforming non-existent things into dharmas, and approve of transforming existent things into dharmas. First, if impermanence is applied to the generality of color, then impermanence will become a dharma of the generality of non-existent things, so it will become without essence. If you think so, it does not become the nature of non-existent things, but the self-character itself does not

Because permanence is established in this way, the mind also grasps it, and the reasoning also establishes it. For example, the general mind that grasps fire as having heat mixes the appearance of "this fire is hot" with a single appearance, and although it clings to connecting the fire with its own characteristic, it actually focuses on the appearance of fire seen by the conceptual mind, thereby applying the name to it. However, heat does not need to become a general dharma, just as fire itself has heat. As has been established, conceptual minds that accord with reality have the aspect of an object, and there is no independent conceptual object. Second, briefly explain the answer to the debate, and then explain it in detail. First, if impermanence is applied to the general characteristic of color but not to its own characteristic, just as feathers attached to an arrow will not be attached to a pillar, if the place of application is a general characteristic different from the own characteristic, then impermanence will not be established in this way on the own characteristic. Answer: It is not that impermanence is not established on the own characteristic, but because the impermanence that is applied in the mind of the general characteristic is also established on the reality of the own characteristic. If the so-called "general characteristic" is an independent object separate from the own characteristic, then applying it to that will not apply it to the own characteristic. However, apart from the object that is similar to the appearance of the own characteristic—merely the appearance of consciousness—there is no so-called "general characteristic," so the mind grasps color, etc., as impermanent, and it is also established on the object, just as grasping a blue lotus as blue. Second, the general characteristic of reasoning does not deceive the way of the object. The refutation and establishment of each particular do not deceive. First, refute the entity and the dispute. First, whatever entity of reasoning that can infer or establish, in what way does it transform into the nature of being able to refute or establish, the mind that grasps similarly to this is the reason for the mind that grasps it as the reasoning for establishing a certain dharma. For example, smoke has a relationship of arising from fire, and phenomena have a relationship of nature with impermanence, which is the nature of the reality of the own characteristic. Because one knows that it is like this, the thought arises that "this smoke and phenomena are the reasoning for establishing fire and impermanence," thereby grasping it as the reasoning for establishing that. If the thing itself does not have the ability to establish, it will not be grasped as reasoning, just as a vase will not be grasped as the reasoning for establishing phelgam. That's it.
