If it is realized that everything is emptiness, then the tangible senses and the power of seeds, etc., will completely cease to exist. If this is the case, the wisdom of the senses and the arising of results will become causeless, because the senses and the power of seeds will not exist at all. If arising from no cause, then it will always fall into the extreme of existence and non-existence. In the commentary on 'Heaven-Given Wisdom,' it is said that since the power of the senses cannot be directly perceived, the arising of the wisdom of the senses will become causeless. Here, the power of the seed is the nature of the seed itself, but merely by seeing it, one cannot determine that it has such power. Furthermore, even if it is not seen now, but is seen in other times and places, if it exists, then the previous life can also be known through the previous senses, just as one believes that one exists in childhood, etc. The future life will also appear as the object of the future senses, just as one believes that one will exist tomorrow. Therefore, although the senses are not the object of ordinary people's direct perception, they are established by inference through following and returning with wisdom, just like the opening and closing of the eyes, etc. Like a sprout, it is also inferred as cause and effect by seeing the following and returning, but since the sprout does not exist simultaneously, the wisdom of the senses only sees its own object, and does not see it connected before and after. In short, all direct perception is a universal clinging, or without the conceptual thought of mixing sound and meaning, therefore it is direct perception for the characteristic of the object itself, so it is only entering into the present object that has the object to be grasped. Apart from the appearance of direct perception, there is no conceptual thought of entering, returning, negating, or affirming. Thinking about various terms of negation and affirmation, represented by the past and future, is the conceptual thought of universal clinging, and without the conceptual thought of having meaning that can be mixed with sound, the wisdom of universal clinging will never arise. Therefore, thinking about the existence or non-existence of meanings that are not directly perceived is all inference about that object, and not direct perception. Second, refuting multiplicity. There are two: debate and answer. First, others say, if the object to be measured is determined to be two, then colors such as blue and sounds, etc., are impermanent.

Because valid cognition cannot realize it, color is a self-characteristic, and impermanence is a common characteristic. Knowing that color is impermanent is valid cognition, and the mind that knows it will become another valid cognition, the third aggregate, because it is a mixture of self and common characteristics. There is no certainty that knowing color as impermanent is inferential valid cognition, just as when an oil lamp goes out, merely not seeing the color extinguished is enough to determine impermanence, because it is possible to know it that way without a sign. Also, if one sees the self-characteristic or special feature of sandalwood fire in a room, and then goes behind the room, one recognizes the sandalwood fire from the smoke, because there is no understanding of the non-confusion between the smoke as a sign and the fire with the special feature, so it is not inference, and since the self-characteristic is not seen at that time, it is not direct perception, but because it is a valid cognition that does not confuse the object, it is another valid cognition. In this way, since there are many cases where the object to be measured is not definitely self and common, are there also many cases where the valid cognitions that measure them are not definitely two? Because multiple valid cognitions can engage with one object to be measured, therefore the numbers one and three will not be eliminated. For example, like the mind that sees a special feature, because multiple valid cognitions engage with one object, the engagement of two valid cognitions does not eliminate the number of one object to be measured, and the objects of the two valid cognitions are not separately determined, because self-characteristics can also be known through signs, and the common characteristic of impermanence can also be known without signs, and there is a third aggregate that is not the self and common of the object to be measured, so they say. Second, conceptual valid cognition is not the third aggregate. Refuting the third aggregate of repeated cognition. First, if it is known from a sign, it is inference, otherwise it is not a valid cognition of ascertainment. First, the destruction of color is a conceptual object, a common characteristic. Avoid unreasonable disputes about this. The first is, as it is said in the sutra: Therefore, conceptualization is valid cognition, others do not exist. Just as it is said, the opponent clearly sees the self-characteristic, but imposes the common characteristic of impermanence on it, saying that this is the third aggregate of valid cognition, which is merely arguing without distinguishing between conceptual and non-conceptual objects. Therefore, it is unreasonable to assume that conceptual valid cognition is the third aggregate of the object to be measured, a mixture of self and common, and thus to consider the fault that valid cognition does not measure the object as two.
