That which has attachment is that which, with respect to forms and so forth, is attached to the inner limbs such as the eyes, which are fixated on one's own continuum, by their very nature. This is because of the grasping of self, without the need for other causes, but effortlessly or by its very nature it arises in this way. Therefore, if a person merely generates aversion to his own eyes and so forth because of present suffering, this is merely the arising of a mind of hatred towards that object, but it is not separation from attachment to the self. For even at the time of displeasure with the self, there is still attachment to the self, with the thought of becoming such a self free from suffering. Without aversion to the self that has become another state, one seeks and pursues such a self. Therefore, the arising of such hatred is caused by suffering, it is its cause, it is the result. Therefore, hatred remains only as long as its cause, suffering, has not ceased. When suffering ceases, hatred also ceases. When hatred, the aspect of aversion, ceases, then attachment to the self will again rely on its own former nature. It is like the healing of diseases of the eyes and so forth, or the new acquisition of the eye faculty in another life, and the cessation of the state of occasional anger towards one's own wife. Second, the determination of detachment is: In our own system, because the view of self has been uprooted from its foundation, all clinging to what is beneficial to the self as something to be taken and what is not beneficial as something to be abandoned has been abandoned. Therefore, with respect to all phenomena, the mind is equally balanced or has equanimity. For example, when anointing with sandalwood paste or cutting with knives, there is no arising of attachment with the thought that it is beneficial to me, nor is there arising of anger with the thought that it is harmful to me. Such equality is called detachment. It is impossible for attachment to arise again towards any object. Second, the meaning of the teaching to meditate on suffering is explained: Well then, didn't your Bhagavan also say to meditate on all samsara as a pit of fire and a rakshasa island, full of suffering? Since suffering is meditated upon, how is it said that it is not beneficial for liberation? It is not that meditating on suffering is not beneficial for liberation, but liberation cannot be attained by meditating on suffering alone, because liberation

Because it depends on realizing selflessness. Therefore, it is not only the suffering of suffering and the suffering of change that are said to cause temporary aversion, but considering the pervasive suffering of conditioned existence, it is said to meditate on all of samsara as being of the nature of suffering. The suffering of conditioned existence that we desire is said to be the aggregates that arise from the causes of karma and afflictions, are other-dependent, and are momentary, becoming the basis for future misdeeds. Such a momentary conditioned existence is the basis for the view of selflessness, because if one only realizes this momentary phenomenon, one can realize that apart from falsely clinging to it as self, the so-called self has no inherent nature. Thus, all attachment to self and what belongs to self is exhausted, and liberation is attained. Therefore, seeing selflessness, the view of emptiness, leads to liberation, and no other method can do so, while other meditations, such as impermanence and suffering, and other aspects of the four truths, are directed towards its meaning by becoming the method or meaning of realizing it, or by becoming its function or result, so it alone is the most important. Therefore, it is said that from impermanence one knows the nature of suffering, and from such suffering one necessarily realizes selflessness. The sutra says: Monks, is form permanent or impermanent? Venerable, it is impermanent. Is that which is impermanent suffering or happiness? Venerable, it is suffering, for that which is impermanent is suffering, is subject to change. Is it proper to regard that which is impermanent and suffering, which is subject to change, as 'This is mine, this is I, this is my self'? Venerable, it is not. Thus it is said. Third, the conclusion. Not being free from attachment to self, and because of its influence, clinging to self as the basis of happiness, being attached to all things that belong to self, and from there engaging in and relying on all actions of acceptance and rejection, such a person is not liberated from afflictions such as attachment and defiled actions, such a person is called a samsaric being, because the continuum of karma and afflictions is not cut off, so not even a little
