It is not severance. Therefore, clinging to self is the same as attachment to self, not different like clinging to a woman and being attached to a woman. Because one is not separated from clinging to self, there is no way to completely sever attachment to self. Such attachment to self is a powerful seed of clinging to what is mine. Just by having attachment to self, it is impossible to get rid of completely clinging to what is the cause of my happiness. Therefore, such attachment to self remains the same as before, even in the state of desiring liberation, without diminishing even slightly. Therefore, no matter how much one strives to contemplate what is mine as suffering, because one relies solely on seeing the qualities of what is mine as the cause of happiness, one has the tendency to enter into or accept it. Therefore, for what is mine, it is itself an obstacle to severing attachment. Because one clings to the qualities, one cannot see its faults, thus obscuring it. It is like how someone indulging in the pleasure of sex does not see the impurity of a woman's body. If it is said that at the time of liberation, not only is what is mine severed, but also attachment to self is severed, then according to that, the self that is now considered to be free from attachment will also cease to exist. What is the reason? The yogi who is free from attachment is the one who abandons the self, and the self is like a pile of dung that he should abandon. Therefore, the so-called self is not the one who is free from attachment. If that is the case, how does the yogi who is free from attachment abandon the self? Therefore, his practice of contemplating suffering will also become meaningless. According to you, all the paths of severing attachment are for the sake of purifying the self. If there is no self, one should not strive on the path. Therefore, this is the main fault that Buddhists are accused of. Here is the translation of Lhawang Lodroe's commentary: If attachment to self is severed, If attachment to this is severed, This is not abandoned, like the self. Therefore, contemplating suffering is meaningless. Even if one says that attachment to self is severed, there is no cause for severing attachment without fault. Even if one says that attachment is severed from attachment, one cannot abandon it, because it is the self.

Thus it is. Therefore, it is said that even if you meditate on suffering, you will not abandon attachment. Secondly, those who have not separated from self-attachment, even if they meditate on suffering, they only recognize suffering itself, but that suffering was already manifest in the time of previous attachment, such as body pain and so on. Even so, they have not separated from attachment to it, just as while experiencing suffering, no one is tired of samsara, similarly, even if you have recognized suffering, you cannot abandon it, because you do not understand the cause of counteracting craving - the path contrary to self-grasping, just like experiencing the pain of being sick but not knowing how to take medicine. If it is said that sentient beings sometimes manifest suffering, but because they do not understand that all conditioned phenomena are the nature of suffering, they will not be discouraged, but we, because we understand this, will forever separate from attachment to samsara, just like a man who loses interest in one woman, although he will not lose interest in all women, but if he is very familiar with impurity, he will lose interest in all women. If it is said that seeing faults in the object of attachment, at the moment when the thought of seeing it as a fault has not changed, although the attachment to that object will change, the complete severance of attachment to that object that will never arise will not happen. For example, a lustful person, although temporarily loses interest in one woman, will not lose interest in other women, similarly, losing interest by practicing impurity towards all women is not losing interest in other things such as food, clothing, etc. Even so, if you lose interest in all conditioned phenomena, then what else will you be attached to besides it? Those who have not abandoned self-attachment, even if they lose interest in the conditioned phenomena that should be abandoned, will not abandon the attachment that should be obtained because they are attached to the taste of the bliss of liberation that is far superior to this. Like this, if there is a distinction between regarding what benefits oneself as what should be obtained and what does not benefit oneself as what should be abandoned, then the attachment arising from any one thing, that is, the attachment arising from it, when it is generated by various other causes, is the seed of all attachments, because those people still have the attachment of regarding what benefits themselves as what should be obtained, and for things that are temporarily not needed
