Firstly, the Tirthikas say that there is a general or a chief, because the particulars follow it. To this, the master Dignāga retorts: "Because the object of valid cognition is not known, the chief and the follower are not followers." Thus, they want to prove the self-character of the chief, but existence becomes its unique feature, and there is no following. Although the merely imputed universal is established, it does not help their intention, because they do not understand that the object of inference is the universal character. If it is said that stating only existence as a sign also has the same fault, if it is permissible to state only the nature of existence as the reason, then how is it that only existence is not to be proven? If so, the existence of the chief would also become something to be proven. If it is thought that existence is not merely general existence, but is distinguished by the subject, the chief, and therefore the concomitance is not established for it, then the sign of existence is also distinguished by that subject, and therefore there is no concomitance. Thus, existence Since the particular and the absence of concomitance are the same for both, it is equally flawed in both the reason and the thesis. The second answer: Stating only existence in the thesis does not help there. Here, stating only existence goes as a sign. Therefore, this is not the same as the existence of the chief. Here are examples of how this is a correct sign. First, proving that the general and the chief exist, because that name is given to all existing things and it is made the object of consciousness, so if what is to be proven is the particularity of existence that distinguishes existence from existence and non-existence, that is, merely not being non-existent, then for the subject of the general thing, that sign will not newly prove anything, because the existence of the general thing has already been established. Such an existence as this is not denied by Buddhists with valid cognition, because they consider things like pots to exist. Therefore, since there is no desire to prove the existence of all things in general, if the particular chief existing in one's own intention, which is the cause or pervader of all things, and which has qualities such as permanence and oneness, is taken as the object to be proven, then in the case of proving it, that reason becomes devoid of concomitance, because such a chief, alas!

Just like a son, since it is not observed by valid cognition, those that are presented as reasons, and the subsequent concomitance of its (the principal's) existence is not established, so in any similar instance, because the existence of the principal itself is not observed, it is impossible to see that reason and its subsequent concomitance. Therefore, if the existence of the principal itself is to be established, then it should not be understood as a general dharma merely, but rather those particular existences distinguished by the principal, which is the subject of the desired property, become what is to be established. Therefore, the basis of confusion between the general and the principal is that the mere existence in all dharmas is the subsequent concomitance. Although it is not different from the individual particulars, due to clinging to it as one, imputing the general characteristic as a self-characteristic, without distinguishing the objects of direct perception and inference, one presumes that the principal exists as a self-characteristic. In short, it is not that a general existence cannot be established, but it is not permissible to establish that the basis of the subject of the property is not established. Alternatively, if one establishes the meaning of the words 'principal' etc. as mere existence, then it is not prohibited, but if one establishes the existence of a particular self-characteristic, then there is no subsequent concomitance, as some other commentaries also say. Regarding this, presenting existence as the proof of impermanence, this, in Chinese, is called "bhava" (藏文:བྷ་བ་,梵文天城体:भाव,梵文罗马拟音:bhāva,汉语字面意思:existence), which is a common equivalent for words such as thing, existence, and substance, so translating it as existence is a translation error, it should be translated as thing, otherwise, existence is related to impermanence as the subject of the property. It is impermanent, because it exists. If the reason is not established, then it becomes admitting that there is no connection between the reason and the property, and similarly, for selflessness and space, etc., and the opposite aspects, how many cannot admit that there are no terms, setting these aside, the later Tibetan scholars consider that existence does not pervade impermanence, while most of the earlier Tibetan scholars accepted the text as it is. Thus, the respective views are merely disputes due to the different ways of grasping "existence," but in terms of meaning, according to anyone's view, there is nothing wrong with the mere expression. However, this is not a translation error, because in general, existence is commonly known as a thing, and non-existence is known as a non-thing, similarly, the author of the treatise also uses the terms in the same way, and in this context, for the presence or absence of a pot, it is not necessary to add the distinction of things, etc., but rather it refers to the presence or absence of a self-characteristic.
