If it is certain, then the reverse pervasion is established. If it is certain that it is sandalwood smoke, because it has grasped the distinguishing characteristics of the effect, it can also determine the distinguishing characteristics of the cause, namely sandalwood fire. These are all included in what was said earlier. Therefore, merely because one has not seen that sign existing on the dissimilar side, it does not avoid the error of reverse pervasion, because even if one has not seen it oneself, that sign may exist on the dissimilar side. Therefore, such a sign is itself prone to error. For example, by inferring that one grain of rice is cooked, one assumes that the remaining grains of rice in the container are also cooked. For example, the remaining grains of rice are the subject, they are cooked, because they were cooked in the same container. For example, just like these cooked grains of rice, one establishes the argument. Even if one cannot see the sign of being cooked in the same container on the dissimilar side of other uncooked grains of rice, one cannot infer that all the grains of rice are cooked just because of that. Furthermore, if someone says that the reverse pervasion is completely established merely because they have not seen the sign on the dissimilar side, then this is merely a reason to doubt the pervasion of the sign reverting from the dissimilar side. Therefore, such a reason is referred to here as having a remainder, because since the measure has not determined it, there remains a remainder of doubt in establishing the reverse pervasion. This is what is meant by saying that, and it is not like what the logicians say, that establishing the cause by the effect is a reason with a remainder. Third, explaining the relationship of the determining factor. All signs are established as definitive through relationship. The three definitive signs are without error. First, refuting the view that relationship is not necessary. Establishing one's own view that relies on relationship itself. First, refuting through the three ways of one's own tradition's scriptures, common reasoning, and the acceptance of other traditions. First, in all three cases, accepting the relationship, thereby establishing complete exclusion. Refuting the view that there is no relationship. First, for the first and second cases of the reason, and even for the third case, the teacher Dignāga summarized them, and through "that which is completely established for both is what is to be established," etc., in order to counter the non-establishment of the sign, he explained the ascertainment of the property of the subject, and the sign is meaningful in returning, i.e., contradictory.
