Among the various forms of distinctions, neither the forms of dharma and dharmins, nor any other forms, are objects to be grasped. Because in the multitude of specific terminological distinctions, the various categories that are distinguished, for a self-characterized entity without distinct parts, such diverse distinctions are not permissible on its single nature. Moreover, the essence of that self-characterization is that it exists non-commonly, having turned away from all that is not itself. Therefore, if we speak from the aspect of its eliminating all that is not itself, it can be expressed as being equal to the number of all knowable objects other than it. However, for the self-characterization that completely cuts off all that is not itself, there is no sound that, just as it exists, makes it the actual object of expression and understands it. Likewise, there is no conceptualization that can grasp it in that way. This is because sound and conceptualization are necessarily engaged in the meaning of a generality that distinguishes other aspects. Therefore, even if the sound and conceptualization of a pot can distinguish different categories such as not holding water, the object of sound and conceptualization exists only as a generality that eliminates others, and is not the actual self-characterization of the pot. It is like the previously refuted establishment and engagement of sound and conceptualization. Second, regarding establishing that the object of expressive sound is elimination. Refuting the other's system that asserts the establishment of the object of terms. Explaining that the elimination function of sounds is reasonable in our own system. Among these, there are three refutations of the arguments of others. First, a single self-characterization cannot be an object of expression. A single real generality is not an object of expression, and a self-characterization with a generality is not an object of expression. First, a non-Buddhist grammarian says: If one says, "Give fire," then one takes what is hot and burning, so the term is applied only to the self-characterization. That is not so, because like this, sounds such as fire are established as terms that understand meanings such as heat and burning, thereby showing or understanding that object of expression. So, why is it necessary to apply such a term? Because that term is established for the purpose of naming the three aspects of knowing, speaking, and acting in relation to that meaning, and there is no other necessity beyond that. Even so, if a term is applied only to a self-characterization, then when one later makes a statement, the self-characterization at the time of the previous application of the term has ceased and is no longer present. Therefore, the term is not applied to that self-characterization. Because a self-characterization is a thing that is not mixed with place, time, and form, while a term does not have such certainty, but is self-

Because it includes all expressed things. Secondly, the Vaisheshika and Samkhya schools of non-Buddhists say: Adding names to the self-character is unreasonable, as just stated, so names are added to the common character. The Vaisheshika school considers the common character to be clear and distinct, while the Samkhya school considers it to be unified. This is also unreasonable. Why? Because people must know what things are capable of performing activities such as milking and carrying, in order to achieve such purposes. They will think: Relying on this name, they will understand it by pointing to the self-character of the thing. Therefore, they will use names such as "bull" for things with horns, manes, etc., because adding names is for the purpose of achieving goals. If the purpose of naming is like this, and the species is constant and cannot perform activities such as milking and carrying, then adding names to it, such as the name "bull," would be unnecessary and useless. If you add a name to the common character, will you also understand the self-character? No, just like the previously prohibited "because there is no autonomy," etc. It is also unreasonable to understand because of the connection, because there is no mutual help, so there is no connection. Even if there is a connection, just like saying "cut down the city wall" will not be understood as "cut down the raised city wall," because it is not clearly stated, so the self-character cannot be understood. Just like saying that you cannot do something, it is impossible to understand that you can do it, for example, saying "bull, milk it" when milking. The common character is constant, single, and without parts, while the self-character is impermanent, numerous, and with parts, which are extremely different, so it is impossible to understand them by confusing them with each other. Thirdly, show that it is the same as those who have the lineage, and it is not necessary to add names to other common characters. First, the naked non-Buddhists say: A single common character and a single self-character are not suitable as objects of naming, so they name the manifestation that has the common character. If you name the thing that has the lineage, that is, the material self-character that can achieve the function, then why name the manifestation directly, instead of going through the lineage in the middle that has no necessity and function? If they say that because the place, time, and nature of the manifestation are infinite, it is impossible to name it.
