If it exists elsewhere as indicated by the sixth case ending, then it will not pervade the sky. If it is not different, then pervasion will not exist apart from the sky, so adding the sixth case ending in that way would also be meaningless. Second, regarding the debate that it is unreasonable to apply the term "one" to multiple phenomena: First, it is shown that the reason for applying the term "one"—the universal—is refuted. Then, dispelling doubts about this, it is established as reasonable. Finally, there are three concluding remarks refuting these two debates. First, if it is said that clear objects exist separately without intermingling, and there is no universal different from them, therefore, it is unreasonable to apply the term "tree" to multiple trees, and thus the designation of universal will cease to exist. If that is said, then upon analysis, even if there is no universal, it is nominally established through conceptualization. Relying on the distinct appearances of trees, which are mutually different objects, the intellect that perceives them as a whole in the sense of just "tree," the discriminating consciousness, obscures the unmingled nature of the other clear trees with its own essence. That is, the obscuring concept, which clings to the self-character of "tree," obscures the self or essence of the clear trees, which are the objects being obscured, and even though they are distinct, it makes them appear as if they were mixed by obscuring that very distinctness. How is it mixed? The objects of clear trees, being distinct from non-trees, appear as one non-different thing through some kind of similar excluding essence. Even though there is no universal in the external world, it appears that way to one's own conceptualization, and therefore, due to the power of inner thought, it is strongly proclaimed that there is something called a universal in external objects. In this way, the discriminating consciousness that grasps the universal, whatever universal it imputes, does not exist in the ultimate sense. Like this, clear appearances do not follow each other, so it is not a universal, nor is it one. Moreover, the meaning of a universal that follows clear appearances does not appear to an unconfused intellect, so it is merely a fabrication. If it is thought that the appearance of "tree" in the concept that grasps "tree" is a universal, and that it is also the essence of knowledge, therefore it certainly exists, then how can that appearance, which is non-different from the knowledge that grasps the universal, follow other external objects? Because it is the same entity as inner knowledge. Therefore, objects

This conceptual thought of grasping a generality, which holds manifest things to be of one self or essence, is mistaken or wrong in mistaking its appearing object for a truly characterized entity. Now, if the generality does not exist outside, then the word-consciousness that grasps it will become causeless. If you say that, then, the name 'tree' and the meaning that is just different from non-tree, the different manifestations of the tree that are mutually exclusive, are the seeds of this conceptual thought of grasping a generality. Second, in order to dispel doubts about this and establish its validity, it is reasonable for differences to be the cause of one mind, and it is reasonable for meaninglessness to be like meaningfulness. First, if you say that different manifestations cannot generate one aspect of the mind of grasping a generality, then, the general grasping consciousness that understands manifest things as one kind, and the direct perception that knows things like blue, etc., and the fire and houses, etc., indicated by 'etc.', when establishing one thing, some causes like the manifestation of a tree, etc., although their own entities are different, are certain to generate it in this way by the nature or essence of things. For example, the sense powers and the objects and attention indicated by 'etc.', although their own entities are different and there is no other common generality that can generate a result, are like generating one sense consciousness. For example, some medicines like radish and parpata, etc., although their essences are different, if they are mixed together, or the different parts of parpata that arise in different places and times, also, with a common power, are seen to perform one action of pacifying diseases like epidemics, while other things like yogurt and cardamom do not pacify that epidemic. If you say that those causes that produce one result are because they have a common generality that produces that one result, then, it is not so, because the generality is permanent, one, pervasive, and without parts, so, because there is no difference in the generality of medicines, etc., the generality does not pacify diseases, and also, the fields, times, and farming, etc., in which those medicines grow are different, it would follow that there is no difference in the speed of pacifying diseases. Furthermore, because a permanent or stable thing that does not change its own essence does not benefit the result, it is also not generated by the generality. Second, showing that the generality is not truly existent in appearance, but appears as if it were existent: Thus, the generality is established in meaning as
