According to what is said in the Offering Discourse, this second chapter explains the method of realizing the path to liberation through reasoning. The Teacher is regarded as a valid person. His proofs are explained in detail. There are three purposes for teaching in this way. First, the definition of valid cognition in general is explained. Therefore, the Thubpa (Shakyamuni Buddha) is shown to be valid. First, the definition of valid cognition is shown. And the way in which exclusion is established from it. There is a refutation of objections to that. First, valid cognition is said to be knowledge that is non-deceptive. So it is said. Secondly, if merely the appearance of an object is non-deceptive, then like the appearance of two moons, non-conceptual mistaken consciousness and conceptual wrong consciousness like mistaking a variegated rope for a snake also have their own appearing objects. If one grasps only what is obtained, then direct perception and inference would also become grasping what is not obtained and not grasping what is grasped, because the object and the subject are momentary. Therefore, the so-called non-deceptive knowledge would be impossible. If one thinks so, then, since the self-character of the object of a person's engagement is able to perform a function, it is examined by means of conventional analysis and engagement and disengagement are performed. As previously explained, it is not necessary to examine whether something that cannot perform a function is an object of engagement and disengagement. Therefore, when these minds have completely ascertained the object and entered into it, that which remains capable of performing a function in that way is non-deceptive. Therefore, it is called valid cognition because the object is obtained as the mind has ascertained it. The existence of such an obtained object is undeniably present in the world. Apart from this, the meaning of valid cognition in conventional terms is completely fulfilled. Therefore, wrong cognitions and the like do not exist in the nature of the object as ascertained by the mind. Nor is it necessary to separate and analyze moments. Therefore, non-deceptive knowledge is possible in that way. Moreover, with respect to what object of action is it non-deceptive? It is non-deceptive with respect to the self-character of the object as it has been ascertained. By what agent is it non-deceptive? By the mind of the two valid cognitions. How is it non-deceptive? If it ascertains existence, it is non-deceptive with respect to existence; if it ascertains non-existence, it is non-deceptive with respect to non-existence; similarly, because it ascertains whether it is or is not, the object exists in that way. Furthermore, this definition does not possess exclusion and is therefore non-pervasive. Because sound-originated valid cognition is not knowledge, but it is a non-deceptive valid cognition. Generally, sound-originated valid cognition
