A Clear Explanation of the Treatise on Valid Cognition, The Treasury of Eloquence and Light A Clear Explanation of the Treatise on Valid Cognition, The Treasury of Eloquence and Light Pages 1 to 100 Sukhatarucanidhipramanavartikagranthaprakatamabhasanamabiharatismā. Herein resides the Clear Explanation of the Treatise on Valid Cognition, The Treasury of Eloquence and Light. Homage to Manjushri Vajra Sharp, inseparable from the Lama! With a thousand petals of faith blooming, I always respectfully offer to the Lord of Dharma. May that youthful sun of speech, Bestow the light of wisdom that pervades the sky upon this world. Homage to the Omniscient Conqueror and the Conqueror's Sons, Stainless Manjushri, Secret Lord, Samantabhadra, Dignaga, Dharmakirti, Shantarakshita and his son, etc., And all the Lamas of the lineage. Homage to the Conqueror and the Conqueror's words, which have become valid, Clarifying through the path of factual valid cognition, Dharmakirti's excellent treatise is the eye of the world, Among reasonings, it is the essence of reason. Therefore, with a compassionate mind desiring to benefit others, If I make this commentary that clearly explains, May the Conquerors and their Sons of the sky-pervading realms, With their wisdom vision, benefit the teachings and beings. Furthermore, as stated in the Root Tantra of Manjushri: The letter Dha means diligence, It will be widely proclaimed in the southern direction, It will also repel the attacks of opponents, Likewise, diligence will also accomplish mantras. Thus, like one of the six ornaments that adorn Jambudvipa, the venerable Dharmakirti, whose fame spread throughout the three realms like a great banner, with his lion's roar of reasoning, he destroyed all the attacks of demons and heretics, and spread the light of the true Dharma throughout the sky. This is a great and excellent teaching, possessing extremely rare wonders, and is the chief of the seven treatises on valid cognition. In order to propagate the vast teachings, this Treatise on Valid Cognition is explained, which is divided into four meanings: name, meaning, translation, homage, treatise, and conclusion. First meaning: In Sanskrit, Pramana means valid cognition, Vartika means commentary, and Karika means verse. Pra means extreme, first, etc., and Mana means to measure, so it means first measurement or extreme measurement, that is, to measure things without error, or a new and non-deceptive reason.

Therefore, in the meaning translation, it is called "Pramana". The treatise "Compendium on Valid Cognition," which is presented as something to be expressed in this way, is the "Pramana" in this context. Since this treatise explains the intent of these without any deviation, it is called "Pramana-varttika" (Commentary on Valid Cognition). Since it was composed in the form of a verse with eight letters praised, it is called "Compendium of Words". Second, the translation homage is: Although this treatise had already been translated in the early translation period, the proofreading was not completed, which is recorded in the Denkarma catalog and others. Later, when Ma Gelo, Lotsawa Chenpo Ngok, and Sakya Pandita determined the translation and proofreading, they wrote in the translation homage: "Homage to the noble Manjushri Kumara." Third, regarding the content of the treatise, there are: the limbs of composition, the treatise to be composed, and the meaning of the conclusion of the completion of the composition, there are three parts. The first part includes: praise and explanation of the need for composition. First, whatever minds and mental factors of the three realms, such as the net of grasping and clinging to the completely conceptualized, bind samsara and bind one's own continuum, are completely eliminated by the wisdom of the antidote into the nature of non-arising. For the extremely profound, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, who possess the wisdom of the two knowledges, who observe the suchness that cannot be measured by ordinary beings and hearers and self-realizers, are profound, and who simultaneously observe the infinite objects of knowledge, perfectly accomplish the temporary and ultimate benefits for all sentient beings, and whose activities are extremely pure, without any stain of faults, the light of Samantabhadra, I prostrate to that light of Samantabhadra that radiates in all directions and to the ends of time. That is to say, this word can be associated with the Buddha who has the four bodies and activities, or with the three of abandonment, realization, and activity. In terms of activity, the power of words can be understood as: eliminating the darkness of ignorance, revealing the reality of what is to be known, and the light of Samantabhadra, which is mainly the activity of speech, radiates in accordance with the faculties, inclinations, and thoughts of the beings to be tamed. Also, Dharmakirti himself is an emanation of Bodhisattva Samantabhadra. Some also believe that the praise at this time is also a prostration to the noble Samantabhadra.
