Furthermore, if the unique property of sound, such as audibility, can completely distinguish between permanence and impermanence, and thus become a valid argument, because this mark is not seen in both permanent and impermanent things other than sound. For example, if it is stated: sound, as the subject, is permanent, because it has audibility. Then, this would lead to an absurd conclusion: since audibility is not seen in dissimilar aspects, such as impermanent lightning, sound is proven to be permanent by that mark. Similarly, if it is stated: sound is impermanent, because it has audibility. Then, this would lead to another absurd conclusion: since audibility is not seen in dissimilar aspects, such as space, sound is also proven to be impermanent. Such a conclusion is unacceptable, because these two arguments are mutually exclusive and contradictory, and by excluding one, the other is necessarily established. Therefore, this would lead to directly contradictory things existing on the same basis, and it would be harmed by other valid cognitions, so we do not accept such a view. If that is the case, then it is now clear that merely because it is not seen in dissimilar aspects, it does not necessarily establish any conclusion. Just as it was said earlier, for other arguments that assume reverse pervasion is established merely because it is not seen, the thing to be proven by that mark may be harmed by other valid cognitions. Therefore, as the teacher (Dignāga) said, "How can universals and particulars become distinguishing arguments," we should understand it in this way. Sixth, thinking that the negation of tactile objects is reasonable leads to an absurd conclusion: by the mark "because it is not seen by particularists," to prove that tactile objects are neither cold nor hot, and do not exist in the visible earth, water, and fire, this would also lead to an error-free conclusion, because it is reasonable to negate merely because it is not seen. Moreover, the Vaibhāṣika school of the Tirthikas says: in a desolate place without trees and grass, as the subject, there exists the element of wind, because it can perceive neutral tactile objects. When asked how this mark excludes from dissimilar aspects, such as earth, they say: because such tactile objects are not seen in the visible earth, water, and fire, it is excluded. These people think that neutral tactile objects must be the property of elements, and since it is not observed in earth, water, and fire, it must be the property of wind. They also say that since tactile objects can be perceived, they think that not observing it means negating it. Then, do you only negate these visible earth, etc., or do you negate all earth, water, and fire? First, you negate the visible earth, etc., not negating the un-
