If it is not in a place, one cannot determine the specific cause from which the characteristics of the effect originate. If it is determined by valid cognition that it is not in the dissimilar side, then the counter-pervasion is established. If it is determined to be sandalwood smoke, then because the characteristics of the difference in the effect are grasped, the difference in the cause, sandalwood fire, can also be determined. These are all included in what was said before. Therefore, merely because one has not seen that sign existing in the dissimilar side, it does not avoid the error of counter-pervasion, because even if one has not seen it oneself, that sign may still exist in the dissimilar side. Therefore, such a sign is itself prone to error. For example, by inferring that one grain of rice is cooked, it is like saying, "The remaining rice contained in the bag is also cooked." For example, the remaining rice is the subject, it is cooked, because it was cooked in the same bag. It is established like these cooked grains of rice. Even if one cannot see that sign of being cooked in the same bag on other uncooked rice, one cannot infer that all the rice is cooked merely because of that. Furthermore, if someone says that the counter-pervasion is completely established merely because they have not seen the sign existing in the dissimilar side, then this is merely a cause for doubting the pervasion of the sign receding from the dissimilar side. Such a reason is referred to here as having a remainder, because it has not been determined by valid cognition, so there remains a remainder of doubt in establishing the counter-pervasion, and that is why it is said that way. But this is not the meaning of what logicians say, that establishing the cause by the effect is a reason with a remainder. Third, explaining the connection of the determining factor. All signs are established as definitive through connection. The three definitive signs are without error. First, refuting the view that connection is not necessary. Establishing one's own view that relies on connection itself. First, there are three refutations: one's own school's scriptures and common reasoning, and the acceptance of other schools. First, it is completely established that connection is accepted in all three cases. Refuting the view that there is no connection. First, not only the first and second cases of the reason, but in all three cases, Acharya Dignāga summarized them, and it is established that both cases can be established.
