It is not reasonable. Secondly, if you do not consider the Agamas as reliable, then the teacher Dignāga said, "Trustworthy words are non-deceptive, inferred from the general characteristic." Is there not a contradiction in considering the Agamas as reliable in this way? There is no contradiction, because here it is not a denial that the Agamas do not exist, but it is said that without the distinction of complete examination, one cannot measure the meaning without error merely by the sound of the Agamas. Those who consider mere Agamas as reliable without being purified by examination, they only take the sound as reliable, and cannot find any other reason for it. Therefore, the meaning of the teacher's Agamas is that "trustworthy words," "non-deceptive," and "inferred from the general characteristic" are understood in the way that each verse is explained in order. When showing which words should be accepted or rejected or kept neutral, the words related to the meaning to be expressed become mutually helpful components of the meaning to be expressed, while unrelated words are like the saying "ten apples." For example, "ten apples and six baskets, deer skin and grass heap," etc., these words have no mutually helpful relationship, just like when explaining medicines that are beneficial for diseases, mentioning the factors of sound and facial expressions and other things. Therefore, the words that have a connection, and the methods that can prove that people can achieve, and the words that mainly concern the goals that people desire, such as heaven and liberation, are the words that should be discussed, because there is no need to discuss words that do not have these three characteristics. That is to say, even if there is a connection, but the method cannot be achieved, such as claiming that decorating with the jewel on the skull of the dragon king can pacify poison. Even if it can be achieved, but it has no practical use for the goals of people, such as examining the teeth of crows. Such words do not bear the responsibility of examining whether they are wrong, because there is no need, so discerning people do not intervene. Therefore, when intervening in words that have three characteristics such as connection, one cannot immediately consider them as correct Agamas just because they are seen. Rather, after fully verifying them through three examinations, they are called trustworthy words on the basis of conviction.

It is not the case that any speech that is unrelated, unable to accomplish meaning, unnecessary, or unpurified by examination is taken as scripture. What is meant by "thoroughly examined"? For those meanings of manifest phenomena that are seen, and for the meanings of hidden and extremely hidden things that are not seen, which are taught in the scriptures, the means of measuring them are direct perception (pramana) and the two types of inference, which do not rely on scripture and rely on scripture itself. Speech that is not harmed is speech that is free from faults, and this treatise, which possesses such qualities, is called "non-deceptive." Among these, in Buddhist scriptures, the five aggregates, which are considered to be objects of direct perception, are established by the direct perception of others' minds and one's own mind, so there is no fault of non-establishment by direct perception in the meaning that is being taught. What is not considered to be direct perception is sound, which is the nature of pleasure, and generality, which is common, etc., which are mostly claimed by other non-Buddhists to be direct perception. As it is taught that these are not direct perception, since they are never seen by direct perception, the means of direct perception does not harm or establish the meaning that is being taught. Furthermore, it is not only relying on the words of the scripture, but it has become an object that can be traversed by reason, so it is taught as something to be inferred. For example, when teaching the meaning of the four noble truths, such as selflessness, it is established by inference that arises from the power of things. Others consider things to be inferred, such as the existence of self (atman) and primordial matter (pradhana), but since there is no reason, it is established by the means of inference. Thus, after being purified by the examination of both direct perception and inference, that treatise should be accepted, and within it, for those distinctions of the extremely hidden that are taught in the scripture, the inference that relies on the scripture itself is: inferring whether there are contradictions between one's own earlier and later statements and between direct and indirect meanings. For example, attachment, hatred, and ignorance are considered to be the cause of non-virtue, and the actions of body and speech that are instigated by them are also considered to be non-virtuous. In order to abandon this non-virtue, bathing in the river and jumping into the fire are taught as methods, which do not contradict the cause of non-virtue, just as relying on sweet, oily, and cold things does not eliminate phlegm disease.
