It is merely an indication in terms of meaning. Other than that, it is unreasonable to have intrinsic existence. Eliminate the doubt that this contradicts the scriptures. Firstly, this inference of knowable non-apprehension cannot establish any meaning or term regarding the non-existence of the "chief," just as the teacher Dignāga stated, "The chief does not exist because it is not apprehended." If the subject, which possesses the three qualities of sound, meaning, and attribute, does not have a chief, then its sound combination is also unreasonable. If there is no sound combination, there is no subject. If there is no subject, one must state an unfounded negation, but that is not permissible because without indicating the meaning to be negated, the term of negation is not permissible. Since there is no subject, it is also impossible for the reason to be established as a property of the subject. If sound combination is performed, then the subject, the chief, exists, and in that case, establishing non-existence is contradictory, and the sign of non-apprehension also reverses, so it is unreasonable for that sign to refute in that way. That is a debate that has not distinguished between appearance and examination. Because sound and meaning exist, there are no three faults such as the non-existence of the subject. Because there is no intrinsic existence, the two faults such as contradiction of the vow are eliminated, because "chief" is merely sound and meaning, without any intrinsic existence. Like this, the sound and meaning that express the very existence of things like pot, birth, and oneness, which are completely established and fabricated by conceptual thought arising from habits passed down from beginningless samsara, and the sound and meaning that measure non-existence, such as the non-existence of a pot, the non-existence of a rabbit's horn, non-birth, and non-oneness, and the dharma of sound and meaning that relies on both, such as knowable and measurable, are of three types, and that sound, which makes those three expressible, by cutting off others besides that, merely casts the meaning of the sound into the realm of intelligence. Therefore, the chief who is merely the meaning of sound, for the material cause or reason of the chief of intrinsic existence of external objects, does not possess it, merely the meaning of sound, for establishing this, the non-apprehension of the intrinsic existence of the chief, thus establishing non-existence, is a correct reason. The sound meaning or conceptual appearance of the chief itself is not non-existent, because the sound combination of "chief" is applied to it and it is established as a subject. Secondly, the appearance of sound meaning itself is not intrinsic existence, and it is not necessarily the case that it arises dependent on intrinsic existence, because even without intrinsic existence, it is possible that it is merely apprehended by sound conceptual thought.

If it is not like that, all sounds uniquely point to the ultimate self-nature, and without self-nature, sounds will not point. If it is thought that what the sound points to must be self-nature, then due to the differences in what each intention and philosophical system sees, for things, sounds, etc., saying that they are permanent and impermanent, are and are not, etc., different sounds, because they are without cause, will not point in that way. For example, for the same tree, due to the differences in what one sees, some say the tree is permanent, some say the tree is impermanent, similarly, some say it has consciousness, some say it does not have consciousness, etc., although there are these statements, all of these are not dependent on the self-nature of the tree, because the self-nature cannot be both this way and that way, so for statements with inconsistent meanings, because there is no reason, it is impossible to say that way. The same fault, for the objects of past and unarisen things, sounds will not point either, because those do not exist now. Furthermore, none of all words are false, because no matter what is said, the self-nature of the thing said exists in that way, so a false statement cannot exist. Therefore, those words are the meaning of discriminating thoughts, and are considered to be merely appearing objects, not the true objects of self-nature. Therefore, if one denies that sounds have no meaning, then because the main support of the dharma to be established, etc., the nature of the sound meaning, is abandoned or canceled, the collection of the probandum and the subject cannot become the probandum, and the unbounded probandum that is not distinguished by any subject, merely the absence of dharma nature, etc., because this has already been established before, so there is no desire to know about just these. Those who do not deny that sounds are merely meanings, with the difference in the way that sound meanings are, for meanings, there are grasping of the various aspects of existence and non-existence. The thing itself that has the fruit of being able to enter is what should be examined, because the self-nature of things depends on producing results, and the needed fruit depends only on this, but the sound merely as meaning cannot produce that result, for example, the sound of fire is merely the object of consciousness.
