Like that, not directly expressing with words, but establishing the unique self-nature as the reason, these two are said in order to establish that the object to be established, another dharma, has a connection of identity with that reason. For example, when establishing destruction or impermanence, just as establishing sound etc. as the result of arising from causes and conditions, establishing existence is also like that. Therefore, the former of these two reasons is called "dependent," because saying "because it is made" indicates dependence on other things that are causes and conditions, and similarly, "because it arises from effort" etc. are also like that. Even if saying "having birth," since birth is the self-nature of the dharma, therefore although it can establish the non-difference of the subject, relying on the cause is also directly expressed by the power of words. If something like existence or object is established as the reason, then it is called "unique" or "pure," because it is not necessary to introduce other causes etc. into the object of thought, the self-nature of the reason can establish it, therefore it is called "only self-nature" or "unique." Even if not introducing others into the object of thought, it can be established like heat to fire, therefore it does not need to rely on others, or only self-nature becomes the reason, therefore it does not need to be purified by others, so it is called "pure." Second, establishing existence as the reason, arguing with establishing the chief object is also the same. To this, showing the difference of unequal answers. First, the heretics say: The general or chief object exists, because it follows each individual dharma. To this, Master Dignāga said: Because of not understanding the realm of valid cognition, the chief and the follower are not followers. Thus making accusations, because wanting to establish the self-characteristic of the chief object, but existence will become its uncommon, there is no following. If it is a fabricated general characteristic, only the general is established, but it is of no benefit to what is desired, therefore it is not understanding that the realm of subsequent inference is the general characteristic. If saying like that, then only establishing existence as the reason also has the same fault, if it is allowed to only establish the self-nature of existence as the cause, then how is only existence not what is to be established? If so, the chief object existing will also become what is to be established. If existence is not generally only existence, but is distinguished by the subject chief object, therefore it has a following to it.

If it is thought that it is not established, since the sign of existence is also distinguished by the dharma, there is no subsequent occurrence. Thus, existence Those who are distinguished do not have subsequent occurrences, because the two are the same, so they are equally deficient in both the argument and the proposition. If so, the second answer is: It is useless to establish only existence in the proposition. Here, only existence is established as a sign. Therefore, this is not the same as the existence of the chief. This sign is correct, with examples. First, if it is proposed that the general and the chief exist, because that name is established for all existing dharmas, and it is taken as the object of consciousness, then it is the distinction of existence that separates existence and non-existence. If it is only to be established that it is not non-existence, then for the dharma of the general object, that sign will not establish any new meaning, because the general existence of the object has already been established. Such existence is not prevented by Buddhists with valid cognition, because they also admit that pots and so on exist. Therefore, since it is not generally desired to establish the existence of all objects, if the special claim of existence in one's own intention, which has qualities such as permanence and oneness, which has become the cause or pervader of all objects, is taken as the proposition, then at the time of establishing it, that argument will become without subsequent occurrence, because such a chief is not observed by valid cognition like the son of a barren woman, so those established as signs and its existence do not establish subsequent occurrence, because in any similar example, the existence of the chief has not been observed, so it is impossible to see that sign and subsequent occurrence. Therefore, if the existence of the chief is the proposition, then it does not refer to the general dharma Only, but refers to the special existence distinguished by the dharma chief of intention, those will become the proposition. Therefore, the confusion between the general and the chief lies in the fact that for all dharmas, only existence follows. Although it is not different from the various distinctions, because of clinging to it, the general characteristic is falsely established as the self-characteristic, and without distinguishing the objects of direct perception and inference, it is assumed that the chief has self-characteristic. In short, general existence is not impossible to become a proposition, but the basis of dharma is not established.
