Therefore, it is reasonable for sounds such as impermanence and conditioned phenomena, which have the fruit of severing from the sprout, and many signs, such as the sound of dependence, to be applied repeatedly to one thing. The fifth argument is: If, like you who assert the exclusion of others, you do not accept a single universal entity, then it would be impossible for a common basis that is both utpala (blue lotus) and blue to exist, because there is no common entity whatsoever. If you say that, then that fault applies to the universal entity proponent himself, and in no way applies to the one who asserts exclusion. For example, when a sound like blue, which distinguishes non-blue, is combined and shows that opposite aspect, at any time when such a sound is combined, it does not abandon or prevent things like utpala (blue lotus) from existing, nor does it affirm or deny it. However, something like blue also seems to pervade and encompass the other thing like utpala (blue lotus), so it also makes people see a flower that has both the attributes of utpala (blue lotus) and blue. At that time, in the mind that holds it in that way, that single appearance becomes the common basis that is both utpala (blue lotus) and blue. If it is merely the accomplishment of distinction, then would there be no existence of utpala (blue lotus) and blue on the thing itself? If the sound of blue, etc., is able to distinguish non-blue, etc., which are its opposites, then the consistency of sound and meaning, just as it distinguishes, will ultimately touch the attributes of the thing, and therefore, the meaning will also be obtained in the same way, so the thing of blue and utpala (blue lotus) exists on the thing that is expressed. Even so, the distinction of common basis, etc., is a name established by the mind, as previously stated. If it is not so, but one thinks of a common basis from a universally existing thing, that is unreasonable. Because on the utpala (blue lotus), apart from blue and utpala (blue lotus), the third thing that is the common basis of both is not expressed by the sound of common basis, because it does not appear in the mind of the measurer. Does merely not appearing negate anything? If a thing is capable of appearing, and that sign is present, then it is necessarily non-existent, so it can be determined in that way. That is to say, when seeing utpala (blue lotus) and blue, time and place have not been robbed, and blue and

Since the nature of Utpala (藏文) is not permanent either, if there is a commonality between blue and Utpala (藏文), why can't it appear? Therefore, since it is not seen, just as a vase is not seen in the negation of a vase, it is merely non-existent. Since the meaning of sound is not a real entity, all sounds that have the exclusion of others as their object, as well as the mind itself, have been explained by the teacher Dignāga as having generality as their object. As it is said: Sounds and correct signs, very well show the exclusion of others. Therefore, for the self-character of a real entity, one in many and many in one are impossible, so terms like commonality are impossible. In the school that speaks of exclusion, the term commonality is very reasonable, now, for the school that speaks of generality, it shows the unreasonableness. First, a statement is made to the Samkhya school that believes that general appearances are one: General appearances are undifferentiated, because the nature of real entities is a single indivisible. Then, from where do the different cognitions of the nature of Utpala (藏文) and blue, etc., arise? That would be without a cause, because of the above reason. If the reason is not established, then the indivisible oneness of generality is undermined. Furthermore, the single indivisible generality, for things that depend on one dharma and follow or do not follow it, is one, that is, it is not the object or nature of commonality, or it is uncertain, because contradictory things cannot gather on one basis, which is harmed by valid cognition. If that is the case, then the class that has become one substance with the white-spotted cow will be both following and not following the black cow. Because it is both the substance of the white-spotted cow and the generality of the cow class. Those particularists who believe that general appearances are different, for their school, commonality is also impossible. If general appearances become different, then the generality of the qualities blue and Utpala (藏文) are different, like birds dwelling in a tree, then the terms that are both Utpala (藏文) and blue, which are both inseparable, will also become without a basis or cause for application, just as the commonality of a pillar and a vase is impossible. For the self-school that speaks of exclusion, because merely the elimination of the exclusion of what is not this exists on all things that have that kind of attribute, therefore, class and having class, or exclusion and having exclusion, are one or different.
