Therefore, the master Dignāga said in treatises such as the Examination of Reasoning, "Because it does not exist, there is doubt about that reason." Therefore, this shows that refuting what is to be refuted is also because the object of observation is not seen, and that is the reason. Because a person is not seen, it is not necessarily the case that life and so on will disappear as a result. Second, all reasons are the same in their ability to establish what is to be established, and they are also the same in merely distinguishing what is not to be established. When establishing, negation can also be understood through the meaning of the opposite, so it is not necessary to divide them into three: effect, nature, and non-observation. If you say so, although they are the same in terms of the ability to establish what is to be established, etc., it is reasonable to distinguish them separately because there is a difference between negation and establishment. Because this non-observation does not acknowledge any aspect of the object of negation, but only through negating that which is to be negated, it is known to be devoid of what is to be negated. And the two previous reasons of effect and nature, which establish the aspect of the object, do not merely show negation, because they establish the object itself, so it is reasonable to distinguish them separately in this way. Second, in this way, the example of non-observation of nature is also established. Explaining the reason for needing non-observation of nature, explaining what its function is, explaining the reason for not separately explaining that example. First, then, does the master only acknowledge the non-observation of cause and pervasion, and not separately acknowledge the example of non-observation of nature? No, although the example of non-observation of nature is not explained separately, it is actually established. For objects that can be observed, such as vases, existence is said to exist in what is observed or appears in this way, and there is no other existence besides this. Therefore, whatever cause or pervader that can be observed, if it is observed, it is called existence. Conversely, if it is not observed, it is actually established as non-existence, because all non-observed objects exist in a state where their own nature, which can appear, is not observed. However, if the statement of non-existence is established because of the reason that the object to be negated itself is not observed, then that is non-observation of nature. If its result is prevented, then that is non-observation of cause, etc., and the difference is only created through combination. Existence is established from observation, and its opposite meaning is appearance.

If it cannot be seen, then non-existence can be established. Therefore, if self-nature appearance cannot be seen, then the term "non-existence" will definitely be used. In order to make the unknowing understand, establishing the term "non-existence," there is also one example of non-appearing self-nature, which is the view of scholars. Because that example can eliminate unknowing, it is necessary. Second, regarding its function. Refuting disputes about things and it. First, refuting what should be refuted, knowledge-expression, and doubt. From this, the term "non-existence" is established. First, if one thinks, what does the sign of non-appearing self-nature refute and what does it establish? Because the objects to which the term "certain existence" applies, such as vases, etc., do not exist, therefore, on that object to be refuted, the terms of knowledge-expression, etc., of existence that have become objects, and doubts such as whether it exists or not, will be refuted. Because for things without an object, the term "having an object" is meaningless. In this way, even if not having an object is already established without relying on signs, it is meaningful to establish its term from this. For example, seeing a burning red, if the term "not fire" is not established, it is like saying, "Because this cannot burn, it is not fire." Although not being able to burn has already been established, it is meaningful to establish the term "not fire" for it. Because it can eliminate both the term "is fire" and doubt, and can establish the term "not fire." For example, seeing an object with a nose ring and a tail, but not understanding the term, it is like saying, "This object is a cow, because it has a nose ring and a tail." Second, refuting the fault that the sign is uncertain for the result. Refuting the fault of not being necessary. First, non-appearance is the basis for the application of terms, and the term "non-existence" must arise from the cause, therefore this sign will establish the result through the cause. If this is the case, the cause is uncertain for establishing the result, which contradicts saying that it is wrong. It is not contradictory, because for all things that can appear, the absence of things is nothing other than non-appearance. Generally speaking, appearance is divided into two types: the nature of the object itself as the object, and the appearance of the subject as the subject. Even from the perspective of the subject, anything that can appear but does not appear is called non-existence, object.
