Doubting, saying "no thing is knowable," thereby excluding the non-knowable, and to fulfill the immediate need, saying "everything is gathered," and "all knowables are seen by omniscience," etc., these forms of imputation in the opposite direction are excluded by those words, rather than first dividing the expressible and the inexpressible into two categories and then excluding one of them, but by excluding the imputation in the opposite direction, the exclusion of others is accomplished. The third debate is: What appears to be the opposite, presenting a mixed examination as the expressible, which is explained as the intention of Dignāga and Dharmakīrti. First, the clarifiers and others say: This exclusion is the same as the universal, that is, the expressing word proves by exclusion, is it expressed by expression or by exclusion? If it is like the first, then the entry of exclusion will be weakened; if it is like the second, then exclusion also needs to enter through exclusion, which will lead to infinite regress. Answer: The word "pot" excludes non-pot, which is merely exclusion, where is there a need for infinite regress? If it is expressed from the opposite of exclusion itself, then it will also exclude non-exclusion, just like the opposite of pot and the exclusion of other than pot, because it is considered that the word enters exclusion, so the meaning is excluded by proof, no other is needed. Even if that does not lead to infinite regress, if the opposite is a thing, then there is the fault of expressing the universal of things; if it is not a thing, then expressing it is unnecessary, because it is impossible to understand things like pots. Answer: Just like the tree appearing in consciousness, a convention is established to exclude non-trees, rather than establishing the convention of "tree" for the mere exclusion of abandoning trees, because the word "tree" is the convention of excluding non-trees, not the convention of excluding non-exclusion, therefore if a convention is made for exclusion itself, then one should establish a convention for excluding non-exclusion, such as exclusion and other-exclusion. Therefore, whatever the intention to express can understand, it arises from the exclusion of others that excludes non-this, which is the root of the establishment of word meaning. Therefore, naming is done through the form of the named thing appearing in the mind, because there the convention is established to exclude the meaning of non-this. Therefore, any sound like a tree, whatever is different from the tree, the non-tree, will be completely excluded, so that its own essence appears from those non-trees.

Therefore, the characteristics of different trees, namely their respective self-characteristics, are produced due to the similarity of species in trees, or are some form of having that cause, which appears as the object of conceptual wisdom, and therefore names are applied, so names are applied to the exclusion of others, or the meaning of names can be established by exclusion itself, so if carefully examined, what is expressed by sound is not an actual object. Even if "non-pot" is cut off, it is still affirming the pot itself, and if it does not participate in affirmation, it cannot show the meaning, so what contradiction is there if it is done in an affirmative way? If sounds can show things in a way that affirms them, then there is no contradiction. But sounds cannot do this, they can only show the difference from others. Therefore, it has been argued that it is impossible to understand through affirmation without relying on exclusion. Even without affirmative understanding, the meaning of names can be established by the power of exclusion, so to assume that it is participating through affirmation is an illusion, just as a rider assumes that walking is done by himself. Therefore, if we examine how understanding meaning from names works, we will admit that it is based on the exclusion of others, which is established by the power of fact. If it is thought that because exclusion has no substance, it should not be thought that the object of appearance of the expressed conceptualization also has shapes, etc., this is not correct. If this is not the case, if the basis of exclusion does not appear, then since there is no object of negation, how can the name of excluding others be obtained? It cannot be obtained. Then, if it is enough to simply take the appearance itself as the object to be expressed, why exclude others? If it is not in the case of excluding others, how can the unique essence grasped by sound and wisdom be determined? It cannot be determined. Then, even if others are not excluded, sound and wisdom cannot operate, but if one's own essence does not appear, it cannot be established by excluding others alone, so these two are the same, if you think so, they are not the same. When using sounds, it is as if the universal concept is established by the power of exclusion, but it is not excluding others by establishing the appearance itself. If that were the case, all sound conceptualizations would become like the objects of appearance of non-conceptualization, etc., and all the faults of affirmative understanding mentioned above would occur. Therefore, in the face of deluded attachment, it seems as if understanding is done through affirmation, but if examined, it will be found that it abides in understanding through exclusion, and therefore it is admitted that understanding is done through exclusion. Second, how this is explained in Dignāga's view: The first teaching. It says to others...
