When, by removing the false imputation of the earth, that which is definitely grasped as something accords with the actual state of affairs, then the terminology of knowledge and expression is without error. It must be held that such terminology, as it is made, is also established in meaning, so it is necessary to understand the meaning by relying on terminology. Thus, being skilled in terminology, treatises are composed for the purpose of generating intelligence that accords with the actual state of affairs, but treatises cannot do anything to the actual state of affairs, because they do not follow the desires of individuals. Therefore, if we examine what these terms that are the basis of things and non-things rely on, they do not actually rely on external self-characteristics, because it is not possible to affirm or negate self-characteristics, and because they are not the actual objects of sound, etc., which has already been extensively explained. So, what should we rely on to use terminology? When relying on the mere sound-meaning that appears before the mind, we want all affirmations and negations to apply in this case. Relying on the exclusion of others, which is merely the exclusion from non-sound, the meaning of the name "sound" appears in the object of conceptualization, such as thinking and saying, "sound is audible," "sound is pleasant," "sound is not corporeal," and "sound is not permanent." Similarly, even the false imputation that sound is permanent, even though it is not in things, also relies on the sound-meaning. Thus, although affirmation and negation are done relying on the sound-meaning, because appearance and conceptualization are mixed together, all worldly people, from learned panditas to foolish cowherds, rely on the path of terminology in this way of understanding and applying to the self-characteristic of meaning. Second, demonstrating that this is reasonable: sound-meaning is not a real thing, but it is reasonable as a basis; other than sound-meaning, it is not reasonable as a basis. First, if affirmation and negation are not done by actually relying on external things, then what is this called sound-meaning? If it itself is a real thing, then the affirmation and negation done to a pot would not apply to sound, just as before, when examining names and characteristics as things to be expressed. If it is thought that it does not have a real thing, then it will not become the basis of terminology either, so the sound-meaning that serves as the basis of terminology is like this, hereafter.

If we examine whether it is an object of the mind, even though there is not the slightest bit of what is said to be established as self-characterized, due to being mistaken for a single appearance, the phenomenon that appears before the conceptual mind, namely the subject of sound and meaning, appears in the mind as related to those external objects, that is, in a non-different way. Moreover, the sound and meaning are also the objects that the expressive sound enters, and for that very reason, without examination, it is said to exist in terms of convention. If it does not exist even before the conceptual mind, then it cannot be the basis of convention. If it is certain, then it is believed that all conventions rely on this, because the way of worldly conventions is just like that. Furthermore, upon examination, the object called sound and meaning conforms to the self-characterized sign by the key point of lacking independence. Because it appears before the conceptual mind due to the power of beginningless habits, it is suitable as a basis for convention. Second, if refutation and establishment are not done in this way for sound and meaning, then in the self-characteristics of things, if one dharma is established or negated, then all dharmas that are identical to what is to be established will become established simultaneously. Similarly, for what is to be refuted, all that should be refuted for that thing will be negated simultaneously, because the nature of the self-characteristic of things is one and there are no different parts. That is indeed the case. When a pot is established, all dharmas that are identical to it are established, and when a pot is destroyed, everything is destroyed, because it is impossible for there to be different parts in the self-characteristic, some established and some not. If the self-characteristic and the dharma to be established are not one, but the self-characteristic of the dharma to be established exists separately, then just as refuting and establishing unrelated others, the establishment and negation of that dharma for whatever subject will become other things, and will not converge on the nature of one subject. For example, establishing impermanence and the qualities of space, etc., on sound, or negating pervasiveness, etc., will not become the dharma of that subject, but will each become different things. Therefore, when refuting and establishing the self-characteristic of things, it will not be reasonable in any way, whether as one or as other. Second, how is refutation and establishment done? The way in which refutation and establishment are applied before the conceptual mind. Merely imputed, convention is possible. Although imputed, it appears as real. First, the basis of various different dharmas.
