Since the (thesis) is a part of what is to be established, i.e., a part, is it permissible to posit a part of what is to be established as the (reason), and is it not appropriate to criticize others' faults above? It is not like that. If one posits "sound produced by effort," even though effort is a part of the (property-of-the-subject) subject sound, this (reason) does not hinder the establishment of impermanence for sound in the slightest. It is not that the subject sound and the (reason) effort are not established as different entities. For example, when many lumps are close together and not seen very clearly, one hesitates whether it is a horse or not. If one says, "This horned lump is not a horse because it is horned," then, taking the lump distinguished by horns as the subject, even if one posits horns as the (reason), it can still be a valid proof of non-horse. Second, or it is said that the subject sound is indicated and understood by being distinguished by "effort," and because "effort" itself does not abide in the subject, but is reversed. When establishing that sound is impermanent by "effort," "effort" does not become a part of what is to be established. Because for that, it is not necessary to newly establish it by the (reason) of "effort." For example, when one wants to know Lhas Byin's house and asks, one points and says, "This is where the crow is staying." After knowing the house, one takes going there as the purpose, and there is no need to look at the crow. Or if one says, "Bring the person with the white clothes," then the person indicated by the white clothes is the desired object, and later, if one does not wear white clothes, one will not become a person who is not brought. Second, because this is similar to what is heard, is it like establishing that sound is impermanent by positing what is heard as the (reason), and will it also become positing the vow as the (reason)? No, because the basis of distinction, sound, and the reverse property are different, so positing the distinction, what is heard, as the (reason) is not reasonable as a part of the vow. The above is the establishment of the aspects of the knowable (thesis). Now is the second, the classification of the knowable (reason): The common necessity of the nine (reasons of the property-of-the-subject) is explained. The specific necessity of the three middle ones is explained. The meaning of not explaining the unseen separately. First, the meaning of classifying starting from the (property-of-the-subject), avoiding the dispute about the (property-of-the-subject) itself, the meaning of classifying into nine (reasons of the property-of-the-subject). First, measure.

In the Matrika Sutra, regarding inference for the benefit of others, there are the presence or absence of similar instances and, for each of the two types, and also for the three dissimilar instances, there are two types of presence or absence. Thus it is said. The object to be measured is what is made and impermanent, what is made and what is heard is produced by effort, impermanent, produced by effort, not tangible, these nine are in relation to permanence and so on. Among these, what is present in the similar class and which is absent among the two absences, that is the reverse of that reason. The other contradictions are uncertain. Thus it is said. This first verse is quoted from the Pramāṇasamuccaya and the final ornament, so although it is slightly different from the translation of the root sutra nowadays, this is good. Thus, only about nine aspects of the dharma are shown, and nothing else is said. In general, this sign has two types, valid and apparent, and the valid also has three types: effect, nature, and non-apprehension, and there are also many internal distinctions within them, and the apparent also has three types: unestablished, contradictory, and uncertain, and there are many internal distinctions within each, so why are only these nine, two valid and seven apparent, spoken of? Because the meaning of the detailed distinction between valid and apparent reasons is vast, in order to easily grasp and understand with little effort, it is for accomplishment, so it is said that it is summarized by distinguishing into nine aspects of the dharma. That is, on a square line, in a nine-cell table with two intersecting lines, the top three are written in order: sound is a property, it is permanent, because it is measurable. And sound is a property, it is impermanent, because it is made. And sound is a property, it is produced by effort, because it is impermanent. The middle three are written in order: sound is a property, it is permanent, because it is made. And sound is a property, it is permanent, because it is audible. And the sound of a conch shell is a property, it is permanent, because it is produced by effort. The bottom three are written in order: sound is a property, it is not produced by effort, because it is impermanent. And the sound of a conch shell is a property, it is impermanent, because it is produced by effort. And sound is a property, it is permanent, because it is not tangible. Write it out like this. After writing it out like this, it becomes two valid, two contradictory, and five uncertain. In the cycle of the nine aspects of the dharma, the top and bottom two are valid.
