Upon that, if the characteristic of being able to establish is not established, then because what is to be established is not common, the example cannot be established, and the sign stated is not common and uncertain. Second, like this, since it is impossible for the word of what is to be established to be applied to meanings that are mutually different, when examining the way in which the word of what is to be established is established for that reason, if you want to apply it to the subject, just as you also name one aspect of what is to be established as "aspect" by its name, then what is the use of the treatise of the logician? There, the characteristic of what is to be established is shown, and it is not necessary to hold on to it in such a complete way, because the opponent himself applies it as he pleases, according to the convenience of the occasion. Therefore, the Buddhists say that the valid means of proof that possesses the three characteristics, and the valid proposition that is promised by it, are of different types, so they are not mixed up with each other. Although the promise of what is to be established is also a collection of meanings, it has already been said that criticizing others with refutations that do not possess the characteristic of what is to be established is not the same for oneself, and it will be explained further in the future. Third, if it is determined beforehand, it is meaningless; if it is determined afterwards, it is also useless. First, if you also use the particle "only" to prevent the means of proof from being unestablished, we also use the word of determination to prevent excessive pervasion, then, as it is said in the Pramāṇasūtra: "Determining beforehand is meaningless, the other case is not accepted." Like this, is it determined beforehand that "the meaning to be established is the proposition"? Or is it determined afterwards that "the meaning to be established is the proposition"? If it is the former, then even if the word of determination is spoken, it is meaningless, because from the power of actually showing the means of proof itself, it can be known that in the meaning of establishing the means of proof, it is not already established, but is to be established. And, in the characteristics of the reason and example, etc., the logician's school has already said "what is to be established is established," because this meaning is already pervasive or sufficient, so there is no doubt about whether the establisher is what is to be established, then what new thing can determination prevent? Therefore, it will become without distinction.

If, in this way, one speaks of a previously determined sound, then that determination merely expresses the nature of the proposition, which is meaningless, because it is understood even without saying it. Then, how can it be explained that one doubts the unestablished example and reason? Even if one does not consider what is to be established as the means of establishing, one does not abandon the consequence that the unestablished means of establishing becomes what is to be established. Moreover, even if it is the means of establishing, it is permissible to become what is to be established. Therefore, by engaging in "what is to be established with the limits of the three times," one does not abandon the common basis of what is to be established and the means of establishing. Even if the self-reverse is not mixed, it becomes a common general characteristic, just as one considers the proposition to be a part of the means of establishing. Second, if one determines one thing from the previous one later, it will not benefit one's own intention, because it will only become a mere exclusion of what is not possessed, and it will not become a meaning that excludes what is possessed by something other than the proposition. How is it that if the word "proposition" is previously determined by a particle or the word "ཉིད་(藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思:ཉིད་,,,)", it is meaningless, so it must be expressed by a meaningless reason or by force as that which is later determined. If so, it is understood that that speech is the fruit that pervades the proposition, because it is only necessary to show that the proposition pervades what is to be established as a non-possessive exclusion. Even so, although it is certain that the proposition is the nature of what is to be established, there is no reason why that nature does not enter the unestablished means of establishing, so the previous fault remains. Second, refuting the example that appears like a side, examining the contradictory view and refuting it. Examining the view that is the reason itself and refuting it. First, separately refuting the question and the view. First, the logician says, if the reason and the proposition are contradictory, then the opponent has no connection with the object of desire, so it is a fault of the proposition, for example, sound is permanent, because everything is impermanent. This is said to be a fault of the proposition because the reason and the proposition are contradictory. In this way, the way in which the proposition becomes faulty due to the reason is, is it merely that the reason does not benefit the object of desire, what is to be established, or is it merely that the reason and what is to be established cannot coexist? This is the question. Second, it is not acceptable that it merely does not benefit, and it is not acceptable that it cannot coexist. First, that the reason does not benefit what is to be established is a fault of the proposition.
