So it is said. Therefore, in our own system, what is intended to be proven at that time is something with a past limit, so that alone is what is to be proven, and the examples etc. that are not established at that time are not what is to be proven but are the means of proof. The proposition is not even considered a part of the means of proof, so there is no confusion. Those who follow logic, etc., consider the proposition to be a part of the means of proof, and since they define the proposition as merely being what is to be proven by the sign, they cannot distinguish between what is to be proven and the means of proof in a single formulation without confusion. Second, examining the meaning involves refuting both the object and the answer itself. First, in the Compendium it says: If the dharma is to be proven, there is no homogeneity. If the subject is to be proven, the sign is meaningless. So it is said. Here, what is it that is to be proven by the sign? Is it just the dharma, such as impermanence? Or is it just the subject, such as sound? Or is it both? If it is the former, there is no similar example, because impermanence is the side, and if the subject, such as sound, is not taken, there is no similar place, so it is impossible to use a pot etc. as an example. If it is the latter, then just the sound is already established, so there is no point in establishing a sign on it. Therefore, since there is no desire to know about the dharma and the subject separately, it is impossible to establish a sign. If you say that both are to be proven, then it will become a fault of both, because each different dharma has to be proven separately. Moreover, these outsiders distinguish between dharma and subject etc. by the usage of sound and words, which are merely objects of exclusion, and without realizing the key point that there is no difference in self-character, they intend to establish that the self-character of sound is permanent, different, and other, or they intend to establish the generality of impermanence etc. that is different from sound, and this shows harm to that intention. If you say that you do not establish the two separately, but take the aggregate meaning as what is to be proven, even if the aggregate is what is to be proven itself, according to your view, you do not admit the arrangement of subject and dharma that relies on the mere terminology of what you want to express, but according to the power of the words themselves, those two, the dharma and the subject, must be what is to be proven, each distinguished by the other. In that case, if you want to establish the sound distinguished by permanence, or the permanence distinguished by sound, what is the reason for establishing that, and what example do you give?
