The fault that is solely related to the assertion itself is a fault of one's own side, but the fault that depends on the subsequent limb of proof, that is, the fault related to the proof itself and its consequences, as has been said above. Therefore, the basis as the subject of the thesis, and both the characteristic and the two included by the word "etc.", being unestablished merely in the opponent's view is not a fault of the side. For example, if it is stated, "Sound is impermanent, because it is measurable," since this is a pseudo-proof, the reason does not establish the assertion that sound is impermanent at that time, and although it seems to harm the assertion, the assertion itself has no fault. Then, if one asserts that sound is permanent, how does refutation occur? That sound is permanent is not refuted merely because it is unestablished in the view of Buddhists, but it is both unestablished and refuted by the force of reality in the view of those who are certain through reasoning. Until it is ascertained by reasoning, there is no refutation, because it can serve as a basis for inference. Similarly, it should be understood with regard to what is established by inference. Then, if one asserts, "The self, as the subject of the thesis, exists everywhere," and since the self is not established by valid cognition, does refutation apply to it through inference? The mere meaning of the word "self" is established for everyone, so merely stating it has no meaning of refutation. If one asserts its particularities as permanent, agent, and pervasive, etc., then this has already been refuted by valid cognition. If one presents a reason to negate or establish it, then since that reason is not within the scope of its ability, it is a refutation. However, since there is no refutation in the view of the Vaibhashikas and others, when they establish a proof in the view of Buddhists, it is not a fault of the assertion itself, but when the proof is established, since it is impossible to have the three aspects, one can only point out its faults. Similarly, that sound is impermanent has already been established by valid cognition. When a master like Dharmakirti establishes that sound is impermanent in the view of the Samkhyas by the reason of "being produced," there is no establishment or refutation by valid cognition for the Samkhyas. Because the permanence established in their adherence is not an establishment by valid cognition, and like the Buddhists, it is not refuted by valid cognition either, so for them, "being produced" has a place where the ability to newly establish it applies. Therefore, both establishment and refutation are by valid cognition, otherwise, merely asserting through adherence has no meaning of establishment or refutation. Second, exemplifying refutation with examples

Furthermore, the Sutra Pitaka implicitly indicates the other three. Here, one of those is being explained. Firstly, in the commentary on the Abhidharmasamuccaya, there are four examples of negation: sound cannot be heard, a pot is permanent, measuring with valid cognition does not accomplish meaning, and the one with a rabbit is not the moon. These four examples are explained, and they merely show the way to negate the self-nature of phenomena. The four examples of negating the self-nature of phenomena, as stated, serve as a branch of what is to be established, which is the meaning of aggregation to be established. From those parts, i.e., from the perspective of the basis of difference or the qualities of difference, the three flawed assertions that contradict the distinction of the nature of phenomena, contradict the distinction of phenomena, and contradict the self-nature of the nature of phenomena are implicitly indicated. The commentary states that through this method, it should also be understood that the self-nature of the distinction between phenomena and the nature of phenomena is also negated. For example, a whole with parts is not different from its parts, because the distinction of high and low is not apprehended. Parts and a whole with parts are not different, because it would lead to the fault of being non-manifest. Substance is not existent, because the substance of qualities would lead to the fault of being both substance and non-substance. Thus it is said. Secondly, examples are given to eliminate the distinctions of phenomena. By this, one is also advised to understand others. Firstly, the assertion related to the necessity is stated. This is the explanation of the way of clarifying reality. Firstly, among the three contradictions, in this case, the meaning of eliminating the nature and distinctions of phenomena is implicitly indicated and shown. Therefore, the intention of the particularists, i.e., the example of contradicting the distinctions of phenomena, is only briefly stated. Having made this assertion, secondly, the intention to be eliminated is determined, and the way in which it is contradicted by reasoning. Firstly, there is no whole with parts that is different from its parts, because the distinction of being lower is not apprehended. This is an example of contradicting the distinctions of phenomena. In this regard, if it is asserted that a whole with parts is not different from its parts, it would become a negation of the distinctions of the nature of phenomena. It is not merely negating other phenomena, but negating its distinctions such as weight. Moreover, the particularists believe that parts and a whole with parts are different entities because there are distinctions such as seeing and not seeing, obscuring and not obscuring, etc. The part of phenomena
