How is the statement made? Even if one's own words are placed in a position different from faith, although not relying on scripture, it is to understand that one's own words alone can hinder the statement of vows. Because the obstacle that prevents the thing to be proven from being established as it is, is the same as the obstacle caused by the promised self-word or scripture, so whether they are combined into one or separated, there is no contradiction. Second, if the debater has already promised to take the treatise as the standard for measuring all things, then does he think that the treatise will harm all things that contradict it? If the debater does not accept that scripture, then does it harm the thing to be proven? If so, then the Buddha's scripture will also harm the Vaibhashika's view that sound is permanent. If not, then even if promised, it will not cause harm, therefore, for the field that can be decided by reason, whether promised or not, scripture will not exist as a harmer. If it is because of the previous promise that it contradicts the treatise, then the debater's own words contradicting will cause harm, is that so? If so, then as mentioned above, there is no different effect between self-word and treatise contradicting, it will only become an obstacle to the debater's words, and cannot cause harm, just as mentioned before. If it is thought that because scripture is valid cognition, it can cause harm, then without a reason for establishing it as valid cognition, merely because of personal desire to regard it as valid cognition, and saying that it is valid cognition, if it can become valid cognition in this way, then this treatise will become a completely perfect valid cognition, that is too wonderful, this is ridicule. If it does not depend on the truth or falsity of the thing itself, but merely because it is considered valid cognition, it becomes valid cognition, then one's own words will also become valid cognition, therefore, there is not a single thing to be proven that cannot be established. Third, summarizing the main points. Distinguishing and explaining the necessity and unnecessity of scripture. This is an examination of scripture as proof. First, for the field that can be inferred by perception and inference, even if the treatise is not taken as proof and abandoned, there is no fault. For extremely obscure things, if scripture is not accepted, then it is impossible to analyze that field, because there is no other method of measurement. Second, regarding the difference between scripture that cannot be used as proof and scripture that can be used as proof.

Commentary. First, regarding the scriptural statements that reveal the extremely obscure, Whether they are deceptive or not, the examination mostly involves analyzing whether the words of the scriptural statement itself have prior and subsequent contradictions, whether they are explicit or implicit. If the scriptural statement does not definitively show the meaning, then it is expressing a contradiction. For example, it is asserted in the Vedas that attachment, hatred, etc., are the roots of non-Dharma and non-virtue, and then it is asserted that merely washing with water will purify these non-Dharmas. This is like washing with water not contradicting the three poisons, which are the cause of non-Dharma, so how can it purify the sins within sentient beings? Therefore, the scriptural statement that desires Dharma through washing cannot be established without being confused about the extremely obscure. Discipline, Samadhi, and wisdom gradually harm the evil conduct arising from afflictions, its cause being completely entangled, and its seeds being latent. Therefore, the scriptural statements that show these as antidotes to non-Dharma are reasonable. Second, what is seen by direct perception and inference, i.e., what can be established, and what is not seen, i.e., what cannot be established, regarding extremely obscure matters, how are they shown from the scriptural statements? In this regard, according to the order, for the object that can be judged by reason, it is shown as being established by reason, and in explaining the third place of measurement, for any treatise that is free from self-contradiction, which is pure by the three examinations, this should be regarded as the argument for measuring the meaning of the third place without error. Therefore, relying on such scriptural statements, one can engage in such and such analysis of the extremely obscure measurable objects, and not just the reputation of the scriptural statement. Second, refutation by fame. Explaining the nature of refutation by fame. Explaining its establishing example and intention. The meaning of separating refutation by fame. First, regarding, the nature of the fame that refutes, And how it refutes. First, in the auto-commentary of the Sutra, it says: Because of any uncommon reason, subsequent inference does not exist, and combining the meaning that contradicts the fame arising from sound, like saying "The one with a rabbit is not the moon, because it exists." This is what is said, that is, the statement "The one with a rabbit is not the moon," in the world, it is refuted because it is universally known as the moon, and in the Treatise on Logic, it says: The human skull is clean, because of mind.
