If an intelligent proponent, regarding the meaning stated in the scriptures, is not prevented by valid cognition, then by what reason can one prevent him from holding onto the view that the scriptures themselves endorse? If one knows that the meaning of the scriptures is refuted by valid cognition, then knowing this, what reason is there to believe and accept those scriptures merely because of the words of others? Since one would not accept it, there is no possibility of doubt regarding a view that the debater himself does not hold. Those dull-witted debaters, their previous tenets were merely held by their own volition, without any reason to have gained certainty through reasoning. Since this is the case, then later, if they wish, what reason is there not to hold other tenets? Because it depends solely on volition. Therefore, if one is unwilling and must accept it as if being forced, that is like a king's command, but in the context of tenets, such a thing is impossible for what is to be established, and since this is the case, there is no possibility of doubt arising. If there is no doubt, then what is the use of adding to the end of the definition "without the result of cutting off disputes"? It would become meaningless. If someone thinks that even if one has no intention, it is possible to hold the tenets of others in order to please them. Then, such a situation is merely to test the other party, like a game, and is not a proper debate with real strength. Even in such a case, the view that one has promised to establish is the view that one accepts, so in that case, it would not be the case that one is unwilling. Third, summarizing the main points: One should know that the meaning of the scriptures that is not related to the current view to be established does not harm the current view; even if one has promised to accept the scriptures, one should know that not all the meanings of those scriptures are the current view to be established. If this is the case, then it means that the view to be established is not exhausted, therefore, in order to eliminate those misconceptions that all the meanings of the scriptures are the current view to be established, in the explanation of the definition of "thesis" in the Compendium of Topics, the word "self" is specifically mentioned. Second, refuting the view that the meaning of the word "self" is understood as other meanings. First state the view, then refute it. First, completely abandoning the differences caused by different systems of tenets such as outsiders and insiders as the subject, but taking the subject that is universally recognized by both debaters as the meaning to be grasped, the commentary on the Compendium of Topics...

Some others say that this is stating the word "self." Second, revealing the fault of being unreasonable. Refuting the details of the answer to that. First, merely because both debaters are studying the same subject of the property, it has already been actually established that the support property, which is commonly and universally recognized by both, and it has been recognized that the basis is not established, and no one studies its differences. There is no dispute about the matter that is already famous and established among the cowherdesses. In that case, the universally famous and established property is the subject (पक्ष, pakṣa, aspect), and the things that are considered as the difference of investigation due to the different desires of each individual are made into the thesis, because there is no dispute. In short, the mere property is not the thesis, because it is necessary to distinguish it by what dharma in order to generate the desire to understand, therefore, the property of the desire to understand or the meaning of the collection should not be taken as the thesis through the reason, but how can the universally famous property be taken as the thesis? Because it does not need to be established, and the desires of each individual are determined separately, so it is admitted that it is not the thesis. It cannot be written as "The impermanent sound property, is impermanent," and so on. If the inconsistent desires are not taken as the thesis and there is no dispute, then there can be no dispute among those who have consistent desires, so it is impossible to determine which side is the subject in the case of dispute. Second, refuting the answers that eliminate the property established by valid cognition and the unestablished self-character. First, if it is said that by stating "self," it is shown that the meaning of one's own commitment has already been established by valid cognition, thereby stating that the mere property that is famous to both is not the thesis, because it is newly established for the other, therefore the word "self" also eliminates the property that has already been established for the other, then, that is not so. Because "the nature of the thesis itself" and the statement of the suffix "only" or "solely," that is, stating the sole nature, through this itself it can be recognized that what has already been established is not the thesis, since it has already been recognized, stating the word "self" again for that meaning will become meaningless. If it is not desired that the word "self" is for cutting off the meaning that has already been established, then, what thesis is already established from before, and there are also those that are stated as the nature of being established?
