That which is the agent is what causes it to arise, therefore the objects and times arising from causes are sometimes interrupted. Furthermore, those opponents say thus: If it is argued that many do not produce a single result, then do the clear appearances not produce a single general concept? If not, then it is not desired that the general concept, which appears as one without difference, arises from the various clear appearances. It is not reasonable to hold different objects in the same way, just as there is no general concept of non-difference in the way of holding them. It is like not being able to know blue as yellow. If it is argued that the clear appearances give rise to a general concept by establishing their own characteristics, then that objection would be valid, but it is not so. Because a confused conceptualization arises from seeing the clear appearances and mixing similarities into one, that objection is not possible, because self-characteristics do not appear in the general apprehension. If they do appear, do they appear in the general concept as they appear in sense consciousness? Or are self-characteristics established as the general appearance? If it is examined whether one part appears in the general apprehension and one part appears in sense consciousness, then the first is not the case, because there is a general concept even though there are no self-characteristics. The second is not the case, because in sense consciousness, the objects and times appear without mixing their aspects, and in the general concept, only the general meaning appears through various expressions, so it is not established in reality. The third is not the case, because one object does not have two parts of appearing and not appearing. If it is realized that there are many unseen parts in one that appears manifestly, then it is not proper to establish anything as one, so it becomes too extreme. Therefore, this general concept of mixing into one the meanings of different self-characteristics, even if it is caused by the self-characteristics acting as the lord, or arises from their power, is a confused mind, so it is not necessary to hold it as it is in reality. Even though it is a mistake, the way of engaging in terminology through the power of mixing appearances and examinations and excessive attachment has already been explained. Furthermore, even if one speaks of the general as a real entity, how can one avoid the objection that one consciousness is not reasonable for different clear appearances? If one thinks that there is no fault because there is a non-different general, even if the general is admitted, the appearance of different clear appearances cannot be refuted, and because the general does not appear as shape, color, etc., and the clear appearances are seen to have shape, etc., it appears as one.

Since nothing is beneficial, there is no fabrication, and merely through the universal, it is not possible to make it appear as non-different. If, according to the view that appearance and the universal are non-different, then the shape, etc., of one appearance does not follow other appearances, so the universal cannot confer benefit. This is to answer that even if conceptual thought grasps appearances as different but clings to them as one, it will not be harmed by reason. Furthermore, what appears before the conceptual mind that grasps the universal is not only non-different, but there are also cases where it appears as different. The reason for this is that these appearances of trees are held to be the same as just trees. If it is held to be the same, it must be held to be different, because how can it be held to be the same if it does not arise from a single form? Therefore, the statement that appearances are different, so it is unreasonable to generate a non-different mind, is also meaningless. Or, if these appearances are the same, that is, without difference, thinking, "This is the previous one," "The previous one is this," and clinging to them as one, then how can the mind grasp them as different? Therefore, the so-called sameness exists in both the non-different universal and the thing, so it is thought that the appearance is different, the pine is also a tree, and the cypress is also a tree, rather than thinking that there is sameness between the extremely different and the non-different. If it is thought that there is sameness between two different appearances, that is, the reason why words and thoughts are applied to the undifferentiated is not because it exists in the non-different universal entity, but because it relies on the similarity of fire and wood, etc., producing the same result, and thus conceptual thought mixes similar things together, but in reality they are not mixed, and there is no similarity between the extremely different and the non-different, so it is only fabricated as the same kind in similarity, and thus this term is established. If it is thought that the result of these different appearances, that is, the minds that grasp themselves, are also different, then the view that entities are different is very much agreed upon. For example, the function of fetching water with gold vases and copper vases, etc., is also different through these entities, and the minds that grasp themselves that arise from each appearance are also different, not one. Then, if it is thought that it is not reasonable to admit that multiple appearances produce one result of grasping the universal, there is no fault. If non-difference or oneness is established from the aspect of entity or thing, then it will become that accusation.
