Therefore, only the reasoning that arises from the power of things themselves can accomplish what needs to be proven. This is because it comes from the actual state of affairs of the thing itself, and does not follow empty words and false imaginations. Therefore, it is said that it is most important to achieve establishment in the thing itself. Second, regarding: The words of the proposition are also not the means of proof; reasoning is the means of proof through transmission. First, someone asks: Since the school considers sound to be valid cognition, shouldn't the words of the proposition also be a means of proof? Answer: The words of the proposition are only to show others the speaker's own intention to express. The mere fact that such an idea exists in the speaker's mind is valid cognition, but it does not give rise to a definite understanding of what needs to be proven. Instead, it raises doubts such as, "Is it like this? Is it not like this?" Therefore, it does not directly prove the meaning of the vow. Until the correct means of proof is seen, it is impossible to make a definite judgment on this. If it were possible to determine, then there would be no possibility that a vow made by anyone would not be fulfilled. Therefore, merely stating what needs to be proven or the vow itself not only cannot directly achieve the goal, but also cannot achieve what needs to be proven through indirect means, because even if traced back to the thing itself, it is impossible to obtain more knowledge from it. Second, although stating the reasoning itself has no power, it can reveal the power that possesses the three characteristics of the thing. Therefore, through indirect means, it ultimately touches the true state of affairs of the thing, thereby accomplishing what needs to be proven. Therefore, merely relying on words cannot accomplish anything, but just as a finger points to the moon, by using words to indicate, thereby recognizing the thing, the thing can be established. Third, regarding refutation: Eliminating doubts about contradicting the scriptures. This is to refute the argument. First, someone asks: Didn't the teacher Dignāga say: "With one's own certainty, wanting to generate in others, certainty, therefore, should be abandoned, except for the relationship of the subject-property, that statement of what is to be established." Doesn't that mean that what needs to be proven should be stated? Answer: It is not like that. Because it reveals what needs to be measured, such as saying: "Reasoning means the object." That is to say, the realm in which the power of the meaning of the reasoning that possesses the three characteristics acts itself possesses the ability to prove what needs to be proven.

It is said that what is without (function) is the meaning to be understood, indicated, or expressed based on reason. Because it is from reason that it is understood. Second, if the statement of the proposition also has a function, because the statement of the proposition is the basis for the entry of the words of reason. If so, then the statement of reason is also because the opponent doubts and wants to know what the matter is like. Because it also depends on this, doubt also becomes a proof. Furthermore, wanting to know, the appropriate time, the opponent's thinking, wanting to establish what is to be proven, etc., would also become proofs. If all of these must be said to be proofs, then it would be too much. If it is said that even if reason is established based on doubt, etc., the direct result of those causes is only the statement of the proposition as a sentence, and it becomes a proof. Then, the other party will admit the side that is inconsistent with the proponent and intention. For example, when it is said that "sound is permanent," the entry of the proof statement that sound is impermanent, because it is the same as the proposition, the statement of proof will become endless. Third, stating the meaning of clear manifestation: having three aspects complete is manifestation, other than that is not manifestation, this is to avoid disputes. First, the verbal expression that establishes the meaning is neither incomplete nor superfluous, but manifests through pure language that generates understanding of the meaning, that is its meaning. That is, other rationalists, etc., and early scholars of one's own school, from the establishment of the debate, also want to establish a syllogism with five members: with "there is fire" to indicate the proposition, with "because there is smoke" to state the reason, with "like a kitchen" to indicate the example, with "whatever has smoke also has fire" to indicate the near connection, and with "there is fire" to indicate the conclusion, they consider it to be five members. Some of one's own school consider it to have three members: proposition, reason, and example, but the example is only an example that shows pervasion, and there is no additional difference in its own ability. Apart from stating the two-membered syllogism, i.e., property and pervasion, there is no other meaning. Because in one's own mind, for whatever meaning, it is the cause or branch that generates understanding.
