Therefore, these two cannot be distinguished. If anything known appears as itself, then it is impossible not to have an object of grasping. You believe that a prior consciousness can appear to a later consciousness, but for an indivisible consciousness, due to differences such as subtle and coarse, it is impossible for it to appear in a way that is different from before, and there is no reason to say that it cannot appear. So why would this become a non-object of grasping? This is merely a promise. If it is said that appearance and object of grasping are not necessarily determined by the object, then the answer to "that is an object of grasping" has already been stated. Second, it is shown that the arising of grasping from grasping is not something other. Refuting the uncertain debate about this. First, the opponent says: The experienceable prior mind has two powers: the power to become the object of grasping of the later mind that experiences, and the power of the proximate cause that generates the later mind. Sometimes, the power of grasping diminishes, but the other power that is the nature of generating the later mind does not diminish. If this is said, then is the prior mind an object of mind or not? If it is not, then the prior minds will not become objects. If it is an object and has the characteristic of being grasped, then it is merely an object of grasping, and there is nothing else that has the power to generate. For example, forms and so on are merely objects of grasping, but if they do not generate their own minds in this way, then the nature of forms and so on themselves will not directly benefit their own grasping minds. But this is not the case; forms and so on themselves, merely by being the characteristic of being grasped by the mind, can generate their own minds. What other factor is there that can determine the arising of this thing besides the power of forms and so on to generate their own minds? Merely being an object of grasping does not generate one's own mind, but is generated by another power, which cannot be ascertained by valid cognition. If this is the case, then all internal minds have the characteristic of being grasped. Therefore, for the prior mind that turns towards the object, it also remains in the characteristic of being grasped, and there is no other change. So why can't it generate its own grasping mind? This cannot be established. Therefore, if the prior mind is an object of grasping, then the later mind that grasps it is the proximate cause, and it becomes the object of experience. Therefore, it is merely the object of grasping of the prior mind of one's own continuum.

Because it must necessarily be the nature of becoming the object of grasping. For external objects, it is the meaning of what is grasped, but it does not necessarily have to be the immediate cause. For the inner mind, there is no way to experience other minds that are not simultaneous without them being the immediate cause. Moreover, just being the immediate cause is not enough to be the defining characteristic of what is grasped, as the mind arising from meditative absorption is said by the Vaibhashikas to arise from the immediate cause, the physical sense organ. And just experiencing is not definitive, as it is assumed that one can know the minds of others. Therefore, the combination of experiencing and immediate cause is the defining characteristic of grasping one's own mind, and there is no other option, which is established in their system. Second, refuting objections. Refuting the uncertainty of what is not grasped by grasping. Refuting the uncertainty of what is grasped by what is not grasped. First, it is unreasonable to explain the nature of what is grasped, both internal and external, in this way, because what is not grasped by ordinary people can also become grasped. For example, subtle particles, pure physical sense organs, and external objects that are interrupted and at the end of an eon can also become objects of grasping for yogis, and also because they can see the minds of others. If you think so, then, this analysis of whether the nature of grasping, such as external objects like forms, and the internal mind itself, is established, is based on the inward vision of ordinary people with impure minds, examining whether or not it becomes an object for them. If it becomes an object, it is said to be the meaning of what is grasped, but it is not done from the perspective of yogis. Because the realization of yogis with pure conduct, who are able to see the meaning beyond the senses, is inconceivable by inward vision, so it is impossible to know that their way of seeing is like this, because it is beyond one's own conduct, just like a blind person examining the conduct of a sighted person. Second, it is also possible that what was previously grasped becomes not grasped later, such as what is near becoming far, what is coarse becoming subtle, what is interrupted by being obscured in between, and what becomes the end of an eon, etc. If you think so, even if forms etc. become the nature of being subtle and obscured etc., what was previously grasped directly by the sense consciousness may become not grasped later, but what new difference that was not there before arises later in the consciousness that grasps forms etc., so that it becomes not grasped?
