Because the capacity for other arising of the ground consciousness is diminished at that time, other ground consciousnesses do not arise from the form of the Ālaya-vijñāna at that time, just as waves arise from the ocean, but depend on their previous movement. If that is the case, since there is the cause, the Ālaya-vijñāna, how do we know that the ground consciousnesses arise appropriately depending on their own immediate causes? If the later ground consciousnesses do not arise depending on the previous ones, but arise only from the single Ālaya-vijñāna, then the previous mind's entry is the same immediate cause, and the later mind would not need to depend on others. If that were the case, it should always produce multiple minds in an uncertain way, but the mind's consciousness is the same as the previous one, and conceptualizations arise sequentially, not simultaneously, so it is very certain that the later depends on the previous sequentially. Second, to state the view of others that all consciousnesses do not always arise simultaneously. Refutation of arising from a permanent and single mind. Refutation of arising from the combination of self and mind. Refutation of arising from formations. First, the Vaiśeṣikas and others say that the mind is extremely subtle, the nature of indivisible atoms, and is permanent. Because it is unique, it enters from the nose sense, and if it is attached to other smells, it will not go to other senses and objects, because it does not go, so when holding one object, other sense consciousnesses will not arise. It does not arise from the power of the previous immediate cause. If you say that, it is not reasonable, because in some cases, when the conditions are complete, the six ground consciousnesses will arise simultaneously as appropriate. Like this, when the ground consciousnesses enter the object, if they arise in the same way, then because the mind is unique, it will not perceive other objects from one object at all times, but this has been refuted by direct perception. What is entering in the same way? From the perspective of the object, there is no difference in clarity, proximity, etc. From the perspective of the observer, if one particularly seeks an object and focuses on it, etc., if there is no difference, then it becomes entering in the same way. Second, the Vaiśeṣikas say that merely the combination of self and mind produces various consciousnesses, not depending on the immediate cause. If you say that, then all consciousnesses will arise simultaneously, because the cause is unchanging and permanent. They say that the efficient cause is

Because there is only one, actions and results do not produce multiple things simultaneously. It is like how one person can only do one thing at a time. If you say so, that is not certain. If it were certain, then how can one lamp be seen by many people at the same time? Because it can be seen that one action, that is, one lamp as the cause, produces multiple eye consciousnesses as the result. Therefore, it is not certain to think that there can only be one action because there is only one actor. If one cause can only produce one action at any time, then that cause will not have the ability to gradually produce multiple knowledges. Because the certainty that one actor can only do one thing has been admitted. Moreover, this sole actor will not have any difference from before, because it is constant. Therefore, it will not change from its initial state. Through this reasoning, it refutes the view of the Lokayata that one body is the cause of multiple consciousnesses, and the Samkhya that the conscious person is the cause of consciousness. Because for them, the harmful reasoning is the same. Third, if the Vaisheshika and others think that from the "fabrication" which is the attribute of the self, each consciousness will necessarily arise, and not all consciousnesses arise without certainty. Then, is this so-called "fabrication" permanent or impermanent? If it is the former, then the faults mentioned above still remain. If it is the latter, if this fabrication is something that did not exist before and arises later, then from what cause did it arise? If it is said that it arises from the previous consciousness, then the later consciousness arises from the fabrication of consciousness, which is actually what is desired. Second, regarding the refutation of the claim that the ability to grasp distinctions is lost, there are three parts: summary, detailed explanation, and conclusion. First, if the previous consciousness is the immediate cause of the later consciousness, but not the object of grasping, therefore it is unreasonable for the later knowledge to transfer to the object. Because for the object of grasping, knowledge is the object of grasping itself, which is merely the cause of the arising of that object-possessor, and there is no other object of grasping besides that. Moreover, the self-cognizing consciousness directly produces an image similar to itself, which is itself the definition of the object of grasping. There is no other cause of the arising of self-cognizing consciousness other than the object of grasping.
