If it is hidden from oneself, one will doubt its existence, like something in a dark room. It's like thinking that there might be a pill in one's stomach, or maybe not. Second, that is not the nature of a valid sign. As a sign, there is no connection to what is to be proven. First, general negation and specific negation. First, to establish through a sign in that way, it must be either the dependent sense faculty and the object of focus, or the mind itself, or the immediately preceding mental activity as the immediately preceding condition, any of which must become a sign. Because among these four aggregates—one's own three causes and the result, the mind itself—there is no other sign that can establish something related to the mind, because self and mental engagement are not causes, and the ability to generate mind has never been seen in such things. Moreover, it is certain that if these three conditions are met, it will arise, and if they are not met, it will not arise. If one recognizes other causes besides these, the causes will become endless. Because that sign is mistaken in establishing what is to be established, the sense faculty is not a correct sign. If one says, 'One has mind because one has sense faculty,' it is like having sense faculty during sleep and fainting, but not necessarily having mind. Even if the object is posited, it is mistaken in the same way as the sense faculty. Just as the presence of blue does not necessarily mean the presence of blue perception. Mind and mental activity are knowledge, and that knowledge is what is to be established in this case, so it is not established in itself. Because the nature of the sign, knowledge itself, is never manifestly established, it is not the sign itself. Because the sign itself is not established, it cannot establish others. To this, if one thinks that although there is no direct perception of the mind knowing itself at its own time, later knowledge is direct perception, that is forgetting one's own tenets. How can something that does not exist at its own time appear clearly, and not even be remembered? Because it has been admitted that the previous knowledge to be remembered cannot be experienced by oneself, and the later knowledge also has no form, how can it make the former an object? This has not been examined. Second, object-dharma should not be a sign, and mind-dharma should not be a sign. First, stating the reason and concluding. First, the mind that clarifies the object, examine what the object is. Examine whether the object is known or not known. First, if it is mind, then it is not established.
