If there is no difference, there will be no wisdom to distinguish. For example, seeing any one of twins or similar things, and then seeing the other later, even if they are different things, one will feel as if seeing the previous one again, and will not know that this is not the previous one, so there is no way to distinguish. Therefore, if the mind itself has no aspect, then it is impossible to distinguish "this mind has arisen, this has not arisen," but the fact that it can be distinguished is obvious, so it is undeniable that the mind has aspects. Second, establishing self-awareness. By establishing the two modes, self-awareness is established. Through the sign of memory, self-awareness is established. First, the root reasoning is briefly stated. The reason for this is explained in detail. First, as mentioned above, the reasoning that establishes the two modes of mind also largely establishes self-awareness. The reason for saying "largely" is that even if the two modes are directly established, if the two modes are established, self-awareness will be established accordingly. Or, if from the perspective of fulfilling one's wishes, it is believed that the aspect of what is taken can recognize the outward object, thereby establishing a mind with the difference between other-awareness and self-awareness, but in reality, experience can only be self-awareness, and other-awareness is impossible, which is naturally established. If it is thought that establishing the two modes, how does it establish self-awareness? When the mind establishes the two modes of grasper and grasped, although the grasped that appears as blue is knowable, if the grasper is a different entity from it, it will become other-awareness, not self-awareness. In this case, if other simultaneous minds contact the grasper in a non-aspectual way, then the same fault will occur as believing that external objects are cognized in a non-aspectual way. If it is believed to be aspectual, then there will be many faults such as infinite regress. Therefore, as mentioned above: "There is also the same dispute there, because it itself is bright." Therefore, the appearance of blue, etc., as the self-nature of the mind, exists as its own object, at that time, there is no difference between grasper and grasped, the mind itself is only bright in the way it appears, so the reason for oneself experiencing oneself is established. Second, establish by examining the object of experience. Explain by examining the mind of the experiencer. Prohibit the common other from illuminating the other. First, state the consequences of not having self-awareness.

Refuting those faults' answers. Firstly, if it is held that all knowledge is merely perceiving others, without admitting self-cognition, then all experiences of "this and such thoughts arose in my mind" would become completely impossible. Because, like the consciousness perceiving blue appearances, it does not experience itself at the time of its own arising. If it is thought that it experiences it after it has ceased, then how can the subsequent consciousness, which takes the blue perception as its object, experience the previous consciousness, which is the object of experience, that has already ceased at the time of the subsequent consciousness? You do not accept the aspect it points to. Since it is impossible to directly grasp things that are not simultaneous, it will not experience anything at all. Just as one cannot experience a vase by pointing one's eyes at an empty space. Since the subsequent consciousness does not experience other objects, it is also held that it does not experience its own nature, so all experiences of "this and such thoughts arose in my mind" will disappear, because nothing can be experienced at all. If this is thought, then the experience of inner thoughts is an undeniable fact, which is negated by this direct perception. If one only clings to external objects, and there is no inner self-cognition or perception, then there must be no consciousness appearing internally, but only the appearance of external objects. But these two are not indistinguishable either. Just as blue and yellow can be known through the experience of consciousness itself. That is to say, the consciousness that has the appearance of external objects such as blue, appears to be clearly directed towards the external, and completely determines the external objects, that is, distinguishes "this is blue, this is yellow," and so on. And the inner consciousness's qualities, such as pleasure and pain, and the perception of blue and yellow, etc., how they arise in one's own continuum, the consciousness that holds them as they are, always clearly directs itself towards the differences in the inner mind-continuum of the one who holds the object, thereby distinguishing their differences. Since these two are established through their respective experiences, if one thinks that "my mind does not experience, but only experiences the object," thereby not admitting self-cognition, then it is the same for other-cognition. Since one can experience and distinguish inner consciousness as "what is this, what is that," then what more can one experience of external objects?
