I realize that, for the arising of consciousness, other factors besides appearance, sense organs, and attention are merely auxiliary conditions, like the function of a single lamp. Because I see that, on top of the aforementioned three factors, as long as there is a lamp, consciousness is sure to arise. Since it is so certain, there is no need for other factors. Therefore, other things, like the shape of the eyeball, are not the cause of holding the lamp. If it is not the cause of generating consciousness, then what is the object? If it is an unrelated object, then it is too extreme. If you say that the shape of the eyeball is the cause of the mind that holds itself, then how does it depend on the lamp? Even if it can generate sensory consciousness by itself, it is unreasonable to hold it arbitrarily without holding the lamp. If you say that the combination of the lamp and the eyeball is the cause of the mind, then even if the eyeball itself has no self-characterization, its appearance will exist just because there is a lamp. Therefore, the combination of the two is not the cause. Because two causes combine to produce a result, it is impossible for only one cause to produce the consciousness of both, just like blue and yellow. Even so, people with bad eyes cannot see the lamp that is not gathered, and people with good eyes cannot see the lamp that is gathered. Because one lamp appears differently due to sensory causes, the sensory consciousness without an object appears only as a clear appearance. Second, refuting based on the object of sensory consciousness: stating harm based on direction, stating harm based on time. First: Stating the inference and its answer, refuting and summarizing the meaning of establishment, there are three points. First point: From the perspective of direction, using words such as distance to the object, to express near, very near, extremely near, and far, and the same applies to the case of far. Therefore, it is unreasonable for the object to appear differently in clarity and unclearness due to the difference in distance. Why? Because you believe that the essence of the object is held nakedly, then no matter how it is held, there should be no difference in holding the essence of one object. Second point: Answering based on the intermediate appearance, refuting the answer based on function. First point: Refuting the answer of appearance difference, refuting the answer of appearance clarity and unclearness. First point: If you say that the sensory object becomes clear or unclear due to the difference in the intermediate appearance, then objects such as vases, some are blocked by the appearance, and some are not blocked.

What is it? Whether these two are near or far, seeing or not seeing will become the same. If there is no obstruction in between, then just like being near, one can also see far away, because it is impossible for phenomena to have obstructions. If there is an obstruction, even if it is near, it will be obstructed by the phenomena in between, just like a vase behind a screen, it will not be seen. Second, the phenomenon is not clear, but the object does not change. The phenomenon itself being unclear is unreasonable. First, if because the intermediate phenomenon is not clear, one can only recognize the general outline of the object, but some of its fine parts are not seen, therefore clarity and unclearness become different, just like looking at the shape of a vase in dim light. If you say so, according to your view, the self-nature of the object is to be grasped nakedly, then is the object to be grasped a coarse, indivisible one? Or is it the sum of the fine, individual dust particles? If it is the former, then the whole external object, nakedly seeing one indivisible part, and from that, the different parts that are not seen, what is the reason? This is impossible. If it is the latter, then when seeing the object, because the self-nature of the dust particles is grasped, so when many different dust particles are seen nakedly, what is the reason for the fine, different parts above that which are not seen? This is also impossible. Apart from these two, coarse and fine, there is no other way to see the object. Thus, since the difference between recognizing some parts and not recognizing others cannot be established, then if the difference between the clarity and unclearness of the intermediate phenomenon causes the mind that grasps it to become different in clarity and unclearness, just like looking at objects at dawn and daytime, if you say so, then what is there to refute in this? Although it is true that the mind becomes clear and unclear due to the difference in causes, this is only reasonable in the way the mind appears, but it is not reasonable in grasping the object without a way of appearing. Because in other appearances, there is a difference between clarity and unclearness, but the object itself has no difference, then when grasping it nakedly, what reason is there for it to appear different? The phenomenon is not clear, but it is not that the object is not grasped, and when grasping, because the object is grasped nakedly, there should be no clarity or unclearness. Second, if the other party asks, why is the phenomenon between the distant object and the sense power not clear? The answer is that the phenomenon is obscured by other dust particles such as dust, smoke, and fog, so it is not clear. Such obscuration
