Yes, just as the other party also thinks that if they go in that direction, they will be able to see the manifested fire. Now, thinking about it, with regard to the nature of the habit of the appearance of fire being able to awaken, one clings to the idea that although there is fire outside, it is merely not manifested, just like when one sees smoke in a dream, one thinks that there is fire in that direction. Therefore, with regard to hidden things, clinging to the idea that they actually exist, and with regard to manifest things, thinking that this is this and that is that, whether one clings to external objects as they appear, or merely thinks that they are just appearances, by the power of the wisdom that arises from the stability of habits, in times of manifestation and non-manifestation, it is like a continuous appearance, and the mere appearance of appearance is no different. Therefore, even if one admits that external objects do not exist, there is no contradiction in the way things appear. The dependent arising of appearances that appear by the power of habits, and the dependent arising of external objects that are admitted by the power of karma, both appear in the same way. If this point is not certain, it is difficult to easily establish the tenets of Mind-Only, so this point is very important. The other party says: If that is the case, then this smoke will not arise from fire, because according to your view, there is only the clear awakening of the habit of fire, and there is no other fire besides that, then such an appearance of fire is comfortable even if it does not exist. The answer is: If one thinks that this smoke is not just the appearance of smoke, but is something that exists in the external world, then its cause must also be the fire of external self-characteristics that existed before, but if one admits that smoke is also just a self-appearance, then there is no need for external fire as a cause, because it arises from internal habits. Because there is a presumption that internal habits can be awakened, there is a thought of clinging to the fire itself, and because one clings to it as its cause, there is no contradiction in saying that it arises from fire, because fire itself is only the awakening of habits, and for the tenets that do not admit fire other than that, it is reasonable to establish hidden fire as merely the ability to awaken habits, because it is its cause. How is it understood? That is to say, the mind-stream is the essence of the habit of being able to generate the appearance of fire, and smoke is the cause or condition that can clearly illuminate the mind of appearance, therefore it is reasonable to say that smoke arises from fire. Because the previous habits are the cause, and what arises from them is the result.

They are also fruits, and some appearances that clearly awaken habits can awaken the habits of others in the present, and they also establish the habits of causes for such later appearances. Therefore, according to the Yogacara school, by the power of mental habits, the sequence of cause and effect of all appearances does not need to rely on external objects, because everything that becomes a cause and an effect is considered to be the dependent origination of other-powered consciousness. Therefore, seeing the power of various habits residing in the mind stream, one develops attachment to the way of cause and effect in external objects and the continuous arising of various hidden phenomena. For example, according to the Sautrantika school, which advocates external objects, the continuum of things exists only for a moment, and only the present has its own characteristics, but they still hold that there are limitless sequences of past and future. This is not because things have their own characteristics, but because of the power of the mind that conceptualizes them. Even if those limitless hidden phenomena have their own characteristics in the external world now, it is not because of the power of the appearance of self-characteristics that they are held to exist, but because the general conceptual mind clings to them, so they appear to exist in its presence. This is very important, so I will just say a little about it. The ultimate nature of these things must be understood starting from the alaya consciousness, so it must be understood from the great vehicle's scriptures. Third, the conclusion: For the wise ones of the Yogacara school, the establishment of all phenomena as cause and effect, action and agent, does not rely on external objects, but is established from the mind itself. Although this kind of statement has factual proof, for those who have difficulty understanding the profound inner dependent origination, they temporarily rely on the appearance of external objects to establish all cause and effect and action, because it is easier to understand this way, so they establish it in this way. Even so, the mind that grasps objects must be established in two ways, so the way these two are established is explained from a rational point of view. And these two ways are not different, but are established through the certainty of experiencing together.
